I bought these for our new cats. I was worried about our furniture but they took to these right away. We have one that just lays on top of our living room carpet and the use it all the time. I attached 2 sided velcro tape to the back of 3 and attached them to certain walls; high enough that they get a good stretch and a good scratch. They are not unattractive when attached to walls; quite inconspicuous. Will definitely buy more when needed.
