I think that the HDD spins at 7200rpm. I do know that accessing information on this WD My Book HDD is as seamless (and quick) as my computer's HDD which does spin at 7200rpm.

Q: Is this a RED, GREEN, or BLACK drive? what's in it?

Still no guarantee what will be inside but WD is dropping the Green line and merging it with the Blue. Two drives I purchased in Dec., 2015 contained Blue 5400 RPM drives.

Q: Does the included backup program compress the files, or can you search backup and get a single file without doing restore?

unless you tell it to compress, the files will look like the original ones. When it asks just tell it to open file folders.

Q: Can you remove the drive from inside the enclosure?

You can but you will void the warranty.
