I want this a lot, but it's too expensive, don't you think?

Actually this is quite reasonable - a clear dome like this is hard to manufacture with consistent results.  Any contamination of the resin will cause either a discoloration or potential cracking.  I worked in the thermoplastics industry for decades and I have seen it all.  This is why most plastics are black in color because it is easier to hide imperfections.  You will also see plastics that are painted to hide imperfections.  With a clear/transparent/translucent resin - if there are any imperfections?  That part is a rejected part.  Going back to this clear dome - yes it is pricy for a bird feeder guard but you can pretty much see through it so you can view the birds.  I could go with a non-transparent dome to stop the squirrels but I would rather see the birds.

Question 2

does the dome prevent blue jays from coming to the  feeder?

No it does not. Blue jays, cardinals, vireos and woodpeckers quickly get used to going under the dome to feed. It is, however, an awesome squirrel deterrent, they bounce right off of it!

Can this be mounted on a pole or not?

It is designed to be hung only; you can't mount it on a pole. It keeps squirrels off the feeder IF you are able to hang the dome / feeder from a branch that extends out in such a way that there are no nearby branches or tree trunk that the squirrels can jump from onto the feeder. I have had 2 of these domes for YEARS and, because I have a setup as I just described, they have been 100% effective and, obviously, hold up very well. I think I bought these 2 almost twenty years ago. Couple other things that may help. The branch from which I hang my 2 feeders, is VERY high up. I use an extender hook (not sure what it's called...Droll Yankee likely sells them) that is maybe 4 ft long from which I hang the dome and then the feeder. Also, I have seen products that can be put on a pole to keep squirrels from going up. But, again, this really only works if there is nothing for them to jump from near the feeder. Don't get discouraged; it can be done! I also have squirrel houses in my yard and feed them separately! Everyone is happy!

Question 4

The description references a tray several times. I see no tray in the photos. Is one included?
