OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS World War II: A Very Short Introduction

"Thinking Man's Wikipedia"
Someone referred to this book series as a "thinking man's Wikipedia." These books may be short but they are not "for dummies" and they are not Cliff Notes-style overviews. The author of this particular one wrote an acclaimed 1200-page history of WWII, but these are his boiled-down thoughts, though he never skimps on setting context. It's a study of World War II, not a thorough documenting of it, but that's what I wanted. Also see historians Daniel Boorstein and James Lacey.

Brilliant coverage of WWII
The hallmark of any great VSI book is that it grabs right at the root of a topic, and this one certainly succeeds. I was highly impressed by the inclusion of battle maps, and the paperback acts as a great summarisation of this immense global conflict without selling any constituent aspect short.

An engaging narrative by a prestigious author
Many times I read the 2nd WW books, from different sizes and perspectives trying to understand what happened to mankind in such dark times and connecting to what happened to my surroundings. This book, despite the size, is very well written. The narrative is deep enough to understand the interlink of all the major events and political thinking before, during and right after 2nd WW while not going to deep keeping the reader engaged to the whole picture. It fits very well for a high school student studying the topic, or to a curious reader that needs to get a fast overall view of the history. If you consider reading this book, I started with the Very Short Introduction for WW I from Michael Eliot Howard (same series) with the wording of this review would fit to it.

Crisp and taut account of WW2
A very crisp and economical account on the background and various happenings and consequences of world war 2. A few maps and related pictures are provided to make the topic more clearer. Buy it if you want to know about the great war in a not-so-detailed but fairly comprehensive way.
