The quintet on that engagement featured Herbie Hancock on piano (both leaders had recently recorded the Blue Note album Chant with the pianist, and would make the LP Royal Flush with him a few months later). The fifth title at Jorgie's is an extended trio version of ""Like Someone in Love"" on which both horns sit out. No other version of this tune by Hancock is known to exist!!

This recording exist.
I was surprised to locate this recording. In my collections I have several with Donald Byrd and Pepper Adams so when this one (COMPLETE LIVE AT JORGIE'S 1961) appeared, it grabbed my attention and I in turn "grabbed" a copy. The main featured artist Byrd and Pepper - attracted me to it, then on reading some of the content and seeing Herbie Hancock's as one of the members, well the only thing left to do was just add this to the collection too. Glad to have found this.

A disappointing recording. I love Donald Byrd but thought that given the poor quality of the recording (drums are too far forward) and the expense of the disc, one would be far better off looking elsewhere.

I'll take his word for it
The tunes played here were all also recorded at Rudy Van Gelders studio around the same time as this Live recording from St Louis. Hush, 6Ms and Jorgie's are all from Donald and Pepper's ROYAL FLUSH album with Herbie Hancock, while Amen was recorded on the slighly earlier album FUEGO, with Jackie McLean and Duke Pearson. I've seen the final track Like Someone In Love advertised as a Herbie Hancock trio track. So if you take the other reviewers opinion and look elsewhere, Barry Harris did a 10 min. version of that standard song LIVE IN TOKYO 1976 - See also the Donald Byrd Pepper Adams list on listomamnia.

Piano to the fore
I was slightly disappointed with this release - or perhaps I expected much more from a Quintet playing live, fronted by Donald Byrd and Pepper Adams and with Herbie Hancock in the rhythm section. I am a big fan of Adams who I put alongside the great Gerry Mulligan - although he is a gruffer, more aggressive exponent of the Baritone Sax - and I am largely satisfied with his efforts on the Disc. Byrd - who, on his day can be a real cracker - is a little bit too restrained and subdued for my money. That certainly cannot be said of Hancock who seems, to my ears, far too far forward in the sound mix and tends to overplay the vamps in his "comping" for the soloists. Herbie was cerainly intent of letting himself be heard on this recording and is rather irritating! The play list is very much in keeping for a live gig and is nicely balanced. A good - though not outstanding - CD.

「Royal Flush (Blue Note BLP 4101)」
Donald Byrd (tp) Pepper Adams (bs) Herbie Hancock (p) Cleveland Eaton (b) Theodore Robinson (ds)June 24, 1961 at "Jorgie's Jazz Club", St. Louis, Missouri.01.
