Is the purpose of this just for a measured pour? I want a small decanter to "open" the wine but seems a regular wine glass would do the same?

I view these little carafes as an elegant way to have a second pour while I'm sitting outside on the deck reading, in lieu of going back in to the kitchen or bringing out the entire bottle of wine. My maximum quota is 2 glasses of wine per day, so it also helps me keep on top of my wine consumption. Plus, it just looks pretty and doesn't tip easily (though I still use a regular wine glass to drink the wine from).

If you are asking this question because you'd like to insert a cork be very gentle. Mine broke in the dishwasher, it's very fragile. The other issue with this item is that the quarter measure of a bottle of wine (187.5 ML) is at the lip. I ended up buying a slightly larger one and marking it with a black Sharpie as to where the 187.5 ML lies. This way you aren't spilling any wine emptying it into the glass.
