You sure can! And no, heat will not effect it. There is a pretty stage filter that looks like your furnace filter and a sock filter inside. I would purchase extra furnace style filters. Should be available for same model on Amazon.

Q: How loud is this thing? I would plan on using it in my garage would it require constant hearing protection?

Not loud at all. I have it on the ceiling in my basement workshop, and I do not wear hearing protection. Even on highest speed it is quiet.
