Easy to understand and learn guitar
This is a nice beginning guitar book. I purchased it for my fiance as he bought a guitar and is trying to learn how to play it. The book is laid out in easy to read detail with a nice graph on the back of the book. Since my fiance is unfamiliar with reading music, or has never had music lessons this book teaches you to play by tab format and is simple for him to understand. Tab (or tablature) is a way of writing down music that can be played on guitar, or drums. Instead of using symbols like standard music notes, it uses ordinary characters and numbers. Tab is one of the best ways to learn music for those who don't know music notes or have never had music classes. Reading tabs is a lot easier and quicker than learning in the traditional way, so it's great for beginners. Because of this he is learning his chords so much quicker. I love that the book covers chords and position chords and is allowing him to learn chord patterns, and correct hand positions for the guitar. The book covers a lot of different styles of music and includes good pictures and descriptions that are simple enough to give him a good start to learning guitar. I consider this book and excellent value, worth every penny of the asking price here and we are definitely enjoying my fiance's newfound guitar skills. He's only had the books a few weeks and is already playing several songs.

No traditional music notation at all in the book
If you wanted to learn how to play the guitar and be able to pick up any sheet music and play it, this is not the book for you. Look closely at the picture, these are not music notes. they are different numbers and a special system called tab, which is not traditional music. There's no actual traditional music notation in the book at all. You're not going to learn to read music, you are going to learn something called tab. They have some special thing called tab which requires you figuring out all the little numbers on the different lines and trying to marry that to the guitar and chords instead of just using regular music notes. It's a bizarre strange thing. I don't understand the point, because unless you've got the special little tab notation system for every piece of music on the planet, you're going to be limited until you turn around and learn how to read music.I assume after some time you'll be able to automatically figure out all the little lines - how they correspond, but it just seems adding an unnecessarily complicated step instead of just showing the music notes and teaching people how to actually really read music. The book itself is a typical 11x17 folded in half and saddle stitched, decent quality paper. The contents just are not a match for me. There's really nothing in this book, other than it showing the finger positions for different chords, that I'm finding useful.I'll keep looking for another beginner book that teaches basic guitar with real music notation. I should have looked at the photos closer. I just assumed they would have the real music in here along with this tab thing they're using. At least it didn't cost a lot.
