Things you need to make sure of is that you do not over tighten it to the pail to a point where the cylinder rubs the pail and you need to keep the metal surface reasonably clean and smooth. I actually put a coat of wax on it. That done, make sure you have enough water and I use a fragrant peanut butter and it’s like magic. **Q: The overall length is exactly 13 inches right ? is this adjustable ? Will it work in the typical 5 gal bucket.** A: Read the description: "all 5-gallon buckets have the same diameter". So, yes, it will fit. **Q: Odd question… but how do you get rid of the rats? Dead or alive… green bin? What about the water in the bucket?** A: It's up for debate! Here's my answer, but don't tell the world!!! I use a 1"x2" board to stir the water to reveal any deaths. I do this daily. Then I put a plastic grocery bag in one hand and the board in the other. Using the board, I carefully bring the carcass to the surface of the water. With hand in the grocery bag, I grip a foot and remove the carcass and very quickly envelop the carcass in the bag and tie the bag shut. Then I march to my garage freezer and put the bag there until garbage pick-up day. On that day, I remove the collection of bags and place them in the green bin. Out of sight -- out of mind!!! That's my story, and I'm sticking with it! It was set up according to the instructions with peanut butter bait. The mouse have incredibly good balance & acrobatics to simply walk on the roller, eat the peanut butter & leap off the roller with ease. Left the trap out for 1 week. Each day the peanut butter bait would be completely eaten away and has to be re-baited on the center rubber bait ring. Same thing everyday.
