Mary Wept Over the Feet of Jesus Hardcover – April 12, 2016

Brown retells about 10 short Bible stories related to prostitution and/or obedience to God in comic-book style, and then in the afterward uses them to make the case with very conversational text that Jesus’ mom was a prostitute. It’s fascinating and interesting and makes a strong religious case for sex-worker rights. A little over a third of the book consists of the afterward, acknowledgments and footnotes — all not just worth reading but excellent in their own right. It’s docked a star not because I didn’t love it but because it feels more like a bonus episode than a full-length stand-alone feature, like an addendum to his great “Paying for It” about his years-long relationship with sex workers. Grade: A-

Chester Brown is always worth reading. His art is great and while the subject matter isn't of great interest to me it's well researched and thought out. He has been interested in Christianity for a long time having drawn Bible stories before. He makes some interesting arguments in the note section. Not sure I agree with all of his ideas here or am sure where some of the ideas come from. The cohesion is a bit loose and he seems to care a lot about what the Bible said about proposition. If you like Chester Brown's work it is definitely worth your time.

i really liked this book. I grew up catholic but had no idea there was so much prostitution/implied sex-work in the bible. the stories are short, but I think it was wroth it just to have someone look at these biblical stories through a lens no one ever really talks about: sex-work, women and the different reasons women choose to engage in sex-work. I never thought to look at the bible from this point of view, so it was really a welcome change of perspective. i also liked that he presents a set of stories that are really varied and don't seem immediately related. but then if you read the notes, which are kinda dense but whatever, you get why he's putting them together in that way.

This book is utterly incredible. My heart is so full of gratitude and love for the work Chester Brown has done here. Reading this felt like a gift for me, sex workers, and other sexual "deviants" everywhere. It's Bible stories portrayed in the simplest way so as to become understandable as stories about the value of affection and generosity. I can't say enough about this book. I just want to hug this artist!!! There's so much to love here! I'm having all the #feels

Absolutely fantastic piece. I love about half of Brown's work, and this definitely on the "love" side. Really interesting thesis presented well and the art is clear and beautiful. Read it the day I got it and read it three more times over the next two days. I've been forcing it on everyone.

This is the most thoughtful and interesting "graphic novel" I've seen since Maus. The author approaches the topic with reverence, intelligence and great style. The afterword, examining the stimulus for this effort, is a great read.

A fan of anything Chester Brown- this didn't disappoint.

I have been reading Cheater Brown since I was in my teens. His art and story telling is deep and to the point.

I'm not sure what to think of this book. It wasn't amusing, it wasn't very clever, and it wasn't even entertaining. It was honestly a waste of time and effort on Chester Brown's part. I really thought this would be an interesting read, give some enlightening or new information about ideas or concepts that are so familiar to us but are suddenly shown from a completely different perspective.Nope.This was book about sex. It was porn. That's all there was to it.

An interesting way to look at various stories in the Bible. I had to go back and read the actual story to see if that was the way it was written. We seemed to have skipped a lot at Sunday School. Talk about a unique way of presenting the scriptures!!!!!

Another mind-opening, mind-bending miracle by the artistic- thinking-genius Chester Brown. This is a beautiful, enlightening, argumentative (in the civilized Canadian fashion) book. A treasure.
