The board and pieces look good. The pieces have a nice weight to them - they don't feel cheap and light like hollow ones do. The board is nicely finished and the fit of the hinges and playing surface is excellent. If you are looking for a very decent budget priced board, this one is a great choice. I'm very happy with mine.

I use this chess set to study games or chess problems. What I like about this chess set is the pieces fit comfortably on the squares, there is some weight to the pieces due to the magnets ; a welcome feature. The plastic pieces are well made with some details, especially the knights. If you don't want to spend a lot for a chess set it is better to go with plastic over wooden because a cheap wooden sets have a lot of imperfections from my experience. I would have liked the lighter colored pieces to be an ivory color like displayed on the box than the bright white which is distracting yet i do like the black and grey squares on the board. When you stare for a long time at a chess board you notice imperfections which can be very annoying. Over all I like this chess set for the price. I would recommend that people keep the set in the box when not in use to prevent scratches to the board.

Absolutely love this set. I’m just learning to play and didn’t want to spend $30+ on my first set. This set really surprised me as soon as I took it out of the Amazon box. You can feel a nice amount of heaviness to the whole set that makes it seem a lot more expensive. Very nice packaging but not packaging that you would keep like some other sets with velvet drawstring bags and velvet-lined cases. In the future, I’ll want things like that, but I like that this set is more for learning, traveling, and kids. Very portable in that it folds in the middle like a ping pong table and you can store the pieces inside. They will move and bang around a lot inside, but this isn’t an issue for me as I’m not trying to keep the pieces pristine while stored. This would definitely make a decent gift for anyone learning to play or who just wants a simple, non-invasive travel set. Each piece has felt on the bottom to protect the piece and board. They also have magnets in the base of each piece and the board also is magnetic. The magnetic pull is very gentle yet strong. It keeps the pieces on the board even if the board is jostled or turned on it’s side. The pieces have a nice feel and weight to them. Not too heavy and not too light. Just right. All of the pieces were included. I wish there were two extra queens for promoting, but that’s not a deal-breaker for me but something to keep in mind when buying future sets. All in all a really great first set and well worth the money paid. Really happy and pleasantly surprised with this and I’m sure you will be too!

I am not one that writes reviews often or even at all but for the sake of people that either want to buy a great first chess set or, like me, wanted to purchase a better second replacement set than the one that I had, I believe that this set is perfect for you. My first set was wooden and I couldn’t really tell the difference of the king and queen. I also did not like the way that the pieces would fall over because they or the board was not magnetized. I also didn’t want to spend over 20.00 for a set. This set checked all the boxes. If you truly like chess but don’t want to spend $40.00 to $100.00 or more for a quality set, this is the one. You won’t be disappointed.

Good for the price

Magnets are strong, yet easy to move. A little small but still a playable size.

Seeing this in person makes me think it is too huge for a traveling chess set, but it is indeed portable because of the magnets, which are not too strong. This set is giftable though, because it doesn’t break the bank and looks twice as good as it’s price point suggests. I am genuinely pleased with my purchase.

Took on a 2-week trip. Great for playing chess on bed or at the pool. If the board gets jostled the pieces stay in position.
