5000 - Large and Heavy Duty - Key Storage Lock Box with Set Your Own Combination

I bought this to replace one I had bought about 8 years earlier which suddenly was very stiff (I suspect someone may have tried to jimmy it open and bent the metal). Very sturdy metal and most importantly, the dials move easily and are easy to read in low light situations, as in the entrance to my Airbnb which is often accessed at night.

I needed a way to provide temporary access to my condo to others (friends, repairmen, etc) when I was not home that was more secure than the "hideakey" or under the rug alternatives. This works perfectly for this purpose. The code is easy to reset, so I change it between uses. The lock itself is very sturdy and secure looking. I haven't tried to force it open with any extreme measures (plenty of videos of just this available online if you're curious), but I just giving it a standard tug/jostling and was not able to break into the lock.The only potential downside I see to this design (compared to others on the market) is that the dials are exposed. I left this outside for almost two weeks, when there was a good amount of rain. I didn't see any immediate wearing from this, but I think that over time that the dials would rust with too much exposure to the elements.Overall I am very happy with this purchase. I considered this to be a higher quality product than most of the others I saw at the same price point.

Here are the PROs and CONs of this product...ADVANTAGES.1. Comparing it to competing brands and features, Vault Locks 5000 is superior..2. The entire housing opens like an oven door. The keys are presented in a deep tray - they do not fall to the ground..3. The lock's U yoke is encased in a vinyl sleeve as an added protection against the elements..4. The key storage is measured 2 3/4" x 1 5/16" x 2 7/8". That is enough space for several keys..5. In back of the lock is a rubber layer. If the device is attached to a door, the padding cushions the shock whenever the door opens and closes..6. You can set your own combination. The process is simple and fool-proof - five easy steps...DISADVANTAGES.1. To make it more ergonomically pleasing, the vendor shaped the lock into a "violin-like" design. The added curves reduced the storage size. A straight rectangular box would be more functional..2. The housing is 1/16" thick steel, and the two interior locking wedges are small. I doubt that the lock can survive a hammer blow. A more robust 3/32" or 1/8" thick housing and bigger locking wedges are needed..On the other hand, this argument may be mute. Common burglar tools include crowbars, lock picks, and large screw drivers to force open doors and windows. . . . How many thieves carry a large hammer to break open a storage lock box especially when not too many homes purchase and use such products..3. A thick black enamel is the only protection against the elements. Instead of mild steel, use stainless steel for the lock.

I really like the size of this vault lock. Fits a good size car key on fob with a little maneuvering. I use it for a CR-V key when I'm out surfing and it just barely fits if I angle it just right. The lock is very sturdy and the whole front opens up. Its really simple to use and the dials are smooth to turn and seem very high-quality.Update: after using for a while now I am upping to 5-stars. I have no issues fitting my key in there now that I'm used to it and the quality is great. I forget to take it off my trailer hitch sometimes and drive all day with it. It still works smoothly and the quality is top- notch!

Not sure if the people who criticized the build quality of this key lock box actually bought it, because the box exudes quality with its all metal construction. The handle has a rubber sleeve to prevent scratching, as does the felt liner on the back surface. Easy to set the lock and has worked great with all the contractors who we have left in there for over the past month. It has a decent amount of space inside (but I'm not a surfer storing car keys inside it either, which apparently they're used for commonly) and when you open it the keys stay on the bottom "shelf" (the lid opens forward and downwards on a hinge), which is a nice feature.

What a HUGE HUGE disappointment. We used this lockbox 5 times and on the 6th time, the lockbox wouldn't open. We tried and tried and tried and it was stuck. It had a key to our house and we had no access in. We called the locksmith and they came by and charged us $150!! to open it and later said that these lockboxes commonly stuck and that it randomly scrambles the lock. They warned us never to buy this brand again.I contacted Vault locks and they were completely unhelpful and totally had no sympathy. They wasted my time by responding with one sentence answers and stating they would "look into reimbursement". This company is a total joke and I would warn anyone who thinks about purchasing from them or the Vault locks, to stay away. You will not only waste the money to buy the lockbox but you will spend much, much more to pay someone to actually open it. The locksmith had to SAW it open, and now I am out $150.I have used 5-7 other types of lockboxes in my past for my business and not one of them has ever broken. That tells you how faulty and cheaply made these are. What a shame and a total waste of time and money.

I am a realtor and have experience using several different lockbox types. This by far is my favorite version. It is roomy inside. Easy to set new combo. Fairly sturdy. Has stop at 0000, so you can open it in the dark without a light source. It is not the lowest price model but it is fairly low priced. I think it gives best “bang for the buck.”

So far I am pleased with most of it. The numbers could be bigger - hard to read in the dark. A great standby unit, no monthly rental fee. Every agent should own a few.
