Q: Can you plug the "open" plugs in the back of each other?

You could if you don't put speaker wire in one. I don't know why you would want to do that but yes they will piggy back.

Q: What size plugs are these?

All banana plugs are NOT the same size. These are the slightly larger (I believe 4mm) size and they did not fit my new Marantz 8012 AVR or my previous Denon AVR.

Q: Can these accept spades? I need to adapt from spades to banana.

They can, but might be a wide 90 off the banana clip.
