This is an excellent book, and well deserving of five stars. Researched in great detail and written in a colorful, expressive manner, this book brings the history of anaesthesia to life in a way that will keep you turning the pages.I believe this book was written by a descendent of John Snow, which makes it even more special and immediate. I was amazed to learn about the intriguing and sometimes bizarre history of something we all take for granted -- anaesthesia.I hope the author writes more medical history books, as this was a real winner. Well worth the $$!

I've red all the french (actually edited) books about history of anaesthesia and an english point of view was quite interesting.I've found a lot of details and anecdotes about the begining of anaesthesia.This work is complementary to "Anaesthesia and the practice of medicine: Historical perspectives", a book book I red too.

As a practicing Anesthesiologist and a medicine history enthusiast I loved this book!...Very entertaining, well written and solid research. I specially loved the enphasys put on John Snow, who in my opinion is the real father of anesthesia as a medical specialty and who I keep as a personal hero and inspiration in my day to day practice.I really hope the author gives us more like this book!
