Every Time We Meet at the Dairy Queen, Your Whole Fucking Face Explodes

Touching. Funny. Weird. Disgusting. And surprisingly affecting.
For my money, Carlton Mellick can do no wrong. And this book is another in the long line of amazing novels I’ve read by him.I don’t intend to spoil any of the twists and surprises inside this slim volume, but if the title seems a bit too gimmicky for you, I want to assure you that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There’s nothing that you gleam from the title and the back cover that isn’t fully fleshed out (pun intended) in the first chapter. From the basic premise we are whisked away. And it gets WEIRD. Wonderfully, weird. And as is apparent in most of Mellick’s work, regardless of the bizarre nature of the story, the emotional core of these characters remains colorful and rich and relatable and, in the case of this book, quite innocent. So not only is this a fun-loving gross-out Bizarro body-horror tale, but this is a story about young love. And about how that young love reshapes us over time.Touching. Funny. Disgusting. And surprisingly affecting.I read this in one sitting. It was a great book.

Love can be messy…
A young girl, named Spiderweb, is the weird girl in school. Our main character has a crush on her and they always sit together awkwardly on the bus but hardly speak… until eventually they do.They fall in love hard and things onky become more challenging when this girl’s friggin face explodes into gory shrapnel of flesh every time she gets excited. Here is an excerpt from the book that sums it up…“She is a very passionate person, thousands of times more passionate than a normal human being is capable. When she falls in love, she falls harder than her human body can handle. Love boils up inside her, like soda shaken in its can. And if her love is strong enough, her human flesh won’t be able to contain it for long.”This story was oddly very cute as these unlikely soul mates in junior high navigate bullying together and endure the strange family that comes with dating Spiderweb. This book is fun, cute, short, sweet, and I’m so glad I enjoyed it so much. There were a few times late in the book where the tense wasn’t consistent but I won’t be too critical of that since it didn’t complicate what was going on much. There are some nasty bits of writing that I liked and I think I want to read another from Mellick.

Adorable horror
The plot is the title. An adorable but horrific story of first love where a very nice girl's face explodes and a boy learns to love her more for it. All the awkwardness of first love, just a little more explodey. Truly a charming, if disturbing, little fairy tale.

A wild but Horrific yet Cute Ride!
The title of the book is exactly what you should expect in the book, as it gets right into it and it never stops from there. Despite it’s short length, it is a fun book that I would definitely reread!

Cute meets bizarro for a great time!
The cover is right.. this book is cute! I started reading Mellick this summer and the books I have read have been full of gore and sex that makes bizarro so... bizarro! But this story adds an element of romance and adorableness that I just loved! It still has many of the elements that make a story fit into the bizarro category, but this is one that I could recommend to someone to get their feet wet and not be totally slapped in the face with something wild, sexy, gory and out of control!Admittedly, this was a title purchase pure and simple. I have about 15 Mellick books on my shelves and I did not NEED to get another one when I have unread ones already. But this title called to me and I just needed to know what the heck was going on in a book with a title as crazy as this. And I am definitely glad I did because I found myself laughing, smiling, and entertained the entire time I read this one.4 stars! HIGHLY recommended for those wanting to dabble in the bizarro world and not get ALL the way in... YET!

starts out cute and sweet and gory
The story begins cute, and sweet, and just a bit gory, and then…well…it explodes and takes a turn into CM3land. Worth it.

A Thumbtack and M&M Blizzard Of Wonderfullness
What can way say about a heart warming tale of exploding faces? Well, I can say that this book is much more than just a book with a goofy title. It is heartwarming, gross, and scary all at the same time. Ultimately, I really loved it. I think it is in my top 5 CM3 books! But I will definitely be reading it again and again to make sure! This book made me feel warm and gooey, like eating a freshly baked chocolate brownie, but before you finish it, you grab the other half and smear it all over your face, poke it up your nose and stick in in your ears. Then, while you are sitting there barefoot in Dairy Queen with brownie all over you and people staring at you confused, a spider crawls across your bare foot and startles you. Yep. Mixed emotions. Like a Blizzard of M&Ms and thumb tacks. DRINK IT!! 5/5 Stars. Another unforgettable CM3 Masterpiece.

Io che ne so? Non sono mica un batterista.Bello, molto ok davvero.

Boy meets Girl meets Carlton Mellick III - need I say more ?
As with all of Mellick's books, you get the 1st paragraph as an 'ease' into the new world he has created, thereafter it's hold on tight as he makes no apologies for rushing you headlong into the bizarre and disturbed. Every Time we Meet is a brilliantly crafted subversion on boy meets girl / boy falls in love with girl / girl has a secret. I read this in one sitting whilst on holiday and finished it in a daze, literally looking around me and feeling totally disorientated as I returned to 'normality'.
