Prince: The Glory Years - A Documentary Review

Perfect Notso Perfect
This is a great documentary video, maybe because Prince doesnt give input. I though it was going to glorify Prince in the do's that he did instead of the don'ts that he didnt' But instead critics, close friends, and musicians talk about the tracks he had to jump on to stay on the rails. Realizing he didnt stay on the same train, this guy had to jump on moving trains to moving trains. He was swimming underwater in a sea of punk rock and disco during the late 70s and held his breath for almost 8 years, thats really tough going. For the first time I actually enjoyed watching in its entirety with the facts that the critics talked about the negatives and the positives. Also the way hip hop came into mainstream and pushed Prince aside as he brought himself to hits throughout the 90's. The thing about hip hop and Prince is that hip hop was a closer live life to reality than Princes fantasy space songs, fantasy to us. Pretty little red corvett or pretty little red gunshot, which happens more often. Plus, one of the critics comments about Prince sing i wanna jack you off and how he got everyone into it--Im glad im not the type of person who can go dumfounded and start singing i wanna jack you off when where are people allowed to do this in a normal reality society, in jail. And i dont beleive the Micheal Jackson ping pong story.

I was looking for more Prince...
I have always loved prince and have great respect for his talent - this video lacks the personal touch that I was looking for. You don't get to see his face or expressions for more than a split second. The history of prince does come across fairly well.

I never got to see early Prince but I have been told there concerts were great. What an artist
I was hoping for more more stage performances. I never got to see early Prince but I have been told there concerts were great. What an artist.

Entertaining & Enjoyable
If your a Prince fan, information about the man is always at a premium and difficult to get. This DVD talks with a former band mate and sound engineers. There are some entertaining stories about how songs were created and Prince's personality and creative process. I thought it was a well done production of his "grory years."

Prince - the glory years
Although there were no interviews with Prince personally. The documentary was very well done. I am a serious Prince fan and even I learned a few new things about him.

Exactly the same DVD as 'Prince: In The 1980's!
I was a bit disappointed Bcause I also bought 'Prince: In the 1980's & it is the EXACT SAME DVD as 'Prince: The Glory Years - A Documentary Review' right down to the picture on the DVD (same as Glory years picture), & contents! So basically I paid twice for the same DVD! It would've been nice to know before spending the money that it's the EXACT SAME DVD DISC!

No "Controversy" in it
I don't know the logic but while describing Prince's albums the authors seemed to be very unprofessional. They said nothing about the Controversy album, they've just mentioned it and moved on. Also, a big part of the dvd are interviews which are not really that interesting (except with Dez Deckerson and Leeds).. It could have been done much better since the artist and his music are much more interesting than this dvd has described... Shallow.. Would not recommend it. Check out Prince Purple dove interviews though,,

Great item for new Prince fans to learn something of the Genius. Purple warriors will have already seen everything.

Maybe I'm Just Like My Mother
I gave this DVD 4 stars because it features Gayle Chapman, Owen Husney, Dez Dickerson and Alan Leeds. Gayle Chapmans' very brief part in Princes very early career succinctly described how, despite her reservations, she was told, "If we're gonna be Superstars then we better act like Superstars! Let's go to breakfast wearing lingerie." And that's how many music superstars are formed, see Ziggy Stardust. I never imagined I would ever hear of her. To me, she could've moved on, got married, had kids, baked apple pie..... Maybe she did. But here she is... Owen Husney... another very early contributer is here, Dez! I thought he'd gone all religious and was busy eating apple pie with Gayle after church on Sunday...... However..... I have read loads of biographies on Prince and Alex Hahn's is the best. Sorry all you Per Nilsen Devotees. So watching this was painful cos I already know the facts I was being told. Paul Gambaccini who I respect for his knowledge of music went further and offered his opinions which opens him up to argument. I don't want that from him. I just want facts from him. So I got irked by him. Despite the first review of this DVD, and with all due respect to that reviewer, there isn't any new or rare unseen footage. So anyhoo, if you're a hardcore purple fan then watch this out of curiosity and because you're a completist. But if you are hardcore be patient with the repetitive derivitive funky scratch guitar that plays behind the narrative over and over again and the facts you already know just to see Gayle et all. Oh and a great photo of Prince with Wendy and Lisa circa the noughties, I'm guessing. Well it was around the time Prince said he will only play with Wendy and Lisa if they apologise for their sexuality!!!! Tongue severly in cheek.... I hope this review helps.

Appaling!
This is truly dreadful. It's just some boring interviews with some industry people about what they think, and 9 times out of 10 the opinions don't reflect the fans opinions, they just praise what sold the most and disregard the rest.Their only thinking about the money as usual!I suppose if you're a really hardcore fan there are are a couple of past stories that maybe interesting but that's about 5% of the dvd. This is cheaply made unofficial tat. If you want some Prince go get a proper concert dvd or movie!
