A Totally Self-Contained Standby Generator
I used my electrician to do the majority of the install and startup, and our plumber to do the gas line off the meter to the generator. That last part was pricier than I had planned, but doing this to code is essential. After a short tutorial the electricians shut off power to the house and in about 15 seconds the generator kicked in and restored power to our house. The delay prevents momentary power losses, which happen more frequently, from causing a momentary restoration. When we returned normal power to the house, the generator shut down in about 30 seconds. The Auto Transfer Switch blocked any power from the generator instantly. I'm impressed with this setup. I must master the Mobile Link app to get this setup on my phone. UPDATE: Wednesday are still very impressed with the generator after four months and one 20-minute power outage. Everything in the house came back on. But you must restart your TVs and reset clocks around the house, no biggie. I have not included ACs in the circuit. But do have an estimate from my electrician - reasonable. The bi-weekly exercise of the generator (does not interfere with your regular power) are right on schedule and reported to the cellphone app.

Kept our home livable during storms. Performs as advertised.
We bought our generator around 3 years ago and had it professionally installed with natural gas. Our house has a well and we work from home so no electricity means no water and no income. The 18kw model is large enough to power our average (2000 sq ft) house with gas appliances and forced air A/C. Generac recommends a Group 26R regular or Group 35 AGM auto battery. We opted for the wet cell 26R initally (cheaper) but have replaced it with an Odyssey AGM 35 battery for better cold weather performance and longevity. We've had a few short (1 day) outages but recently we had a 10 day outage. The generator performed flawlessly and was extremely efficient, consuming around 100 cu ft/hr, far less than the 169cu ft/hr rating at half load. This translated to around $25/day in our area. The transfer switch works flawlessly and transfers power to the generator after about 5 min. When running, lights will occasionally dim when our well pump motor starts up but not enough to cause a reset of our microwave clock. Nothing else was noticeable including hair dryers, electric pots, furnace, etc. Noise level is high, about the same as our Honda gas lawnmower. It is much louder on the exhaust (left) side. The system includes the Mobil Link app which connects via 2.4GHz wifi and reports back some basic parameters. The app is mostly useless but does a good job tracking maintenance and exercise cycles. The Oil and oil filter are supposed to be changed every year or 200 hours. Make sure to keep an extra filter on hand in case you run into an extended outage like we experienced. Fortunately Amazon was still operating during the outage and was able to deliver the parts. Your can use an OEM Generac 070185ES or an auto filter (find on the mfg. Cross Reference, we have used AC Delco and others). The OEM spark plugs are Champion RC14YC with a 0.020" gap. The Generac 6484 contains everything you need but oil for the B maintenance (4 yrs, 400 hours) and includes an air filter. Generac recommends SN or later 5w-20, but you can also use 0w-20 or 5w-30. We used Mobil1EP 0w-20 which also fits our cars. After 200 hours the oil looked new. The unit consumed only enough oil to go from the 'full' circle on the dipstick to the 'add oil' at the bottom of the dipstick. Overall, highly recommended. We have seen a few errors that were cleared via a reset sequence on the generator control panel. An exterior LED light will change color when maintenance is needed or there is an error. I just wish it was quieter.

RELIABLE
I've had a Generac 20kw standby for 12 years......NEVER a problem. It's run for a week at a time during hurricanes! I do the maintenance using synthetic oil and Wix filters and Champion plugs..Tech would charge hundreds!

never buy online
this generator started up twice, but since then, it won't run. Have purchased two brand new batteries and a code keeps coming up "low battery". now can't get generator to kick in. Installation was properly done by following the booklet instructions. Have called generac several times & not getting much help there. Had a generac technician come out & all he said was even though the wiring was done according to the booklet, that a 4 grade wiring was requiring, but he really didn't tell us why the generator wasn't kicking in. I am very frustrated & feel like I have wasted $5500. I purchased this item because my husband is a fully disabled vet & I wanted reassurance & security of having power. Not sure what else I can do.
