Fly Fishing for Sea-Run Cutthroat

... very informative (hence the stars) and somewhat of a good read, but it was quite repetitive
I found the book very informative (hence the stars) and somewhat of a good read, but it was quite repetitive, almost as if each chapter was written for a newspaper column and then collected into the book. The lack of any specific information on where to fish was somewhat annoying, particularly the preachiness of it (some people think its just fine to give out good spots). A few examples of well known spots would help the reader visualize and compare with maps, etc.

Very readable for a fishing guide. Walks you through ...
Very readable for a fishing guide. Walks you through his own learning curve. As far as I can tell after about 70% finished it is really just about fishing around Puget Sound area. I'm sure lessons could be applied elsewhere, but this book is all about western Washington.

Practical and scientific, but also fun to read over and over!
Chester Allen's Fly Fishing for Sea-run Cutthroat is the type of book that every Puget Sound fly fisherman should have in their library. I have been slowly unlocking the vault of sea-run secrets over the past seven years or so, and this book provided me some shining new insight. Not only is it practical and scientific, it is also exciting and each time I reread it I can't wait to get back out on the water. It will be a constant source of inspiration and knowledge for years to come.

Pretty good book
Pretty good book. I've enjoyed it, though it does seem to repeat itself frequently and is full of anecdotes. But it's helped me understand how to fish for Searun Cuts in South Puget Sound. I would definitely recommend this for someone just starting out.

Four Stars
Solid info in the book but as someone said earlier in a review it is quite repetitive.

Bluebacks
Plenty of good stories and tips, plus some eye opening potential for fishing the Pacific shoreline for trout. Search for images of searun cutthroat on the net after reading this book . If that doesn't get you moving check your pulse!

excellent sea run material
I very much enjoyed this book and have shared the material with friends and associates. The book provides many years of experience on the subject. This text, accompanied by works of Les Johnson and Steve Raymond will give the new cutthroat fly fisher enormous amounts of data for these magnificent fishes. Mr. Allen's book is a wonderful resource for salt water cutthroat fishing in Puget Sound.

Great book
A fantastic, thorough and highly informative look at Sea Run cutts. Filled with detailed observations and information for each season, differing tidal stages, weather conditions, food items and more. A true technical look at fishing for Sea Run cutts with information that applies everywhere you can find the fish in question. My only (mild) complaints are that the majority of the information is from Puget Sound, which has slightly different conditions than Coastal BC (where I’m from) but the large majority of the info contained still applies. The other complaint is with the section on flies. It contains 25 which is a good number however more is always better and I feel the book would be near perfect if it had 10-15 more advanced flies using more modern materials. However these complaints are very minor and should not dissuade a potential buyer. If you have an interest in pursuing these wonderful elusive trout than this book is an absolute must buy, no question.

Excellent book. Very good resource for anyone looking to dive deeper into Cuttie fishing.
This book is a great source of info and an awesome resource to help you find fish and actually catch the fish. Other reviews talk about the repetition throughout, and, yes, it is there but not a big enough deal to comment on (ironically, over and over again). He just uses the same turns of phrase a lot and doesn't assume you read the last chapter so he's just being clear. And that's useful. After the first few chapters about location scouting, moon cycles and flies I went out and found some cutties right away on a local beach. Very good resource for anyone looking to dive deeper into Cuttie fishing (and other beach fishing too, btw).
