Eyewitness DK: Epidemic

Wonderful pictures and information
My children love this book. They've learned about several rather horrible diseases and about how their own immune system works. Although I wouldn't recommend it for the faint of heart, I've found that the young ones are prepared to accept a lot of things that I might personally find disturbing. (For instance, the antique sputum cup pictured on the TB page.)My son loves the pictured models of the actual viruses, bacteria and parasites, and has now incorporated all of them into his own little imaginary world. Yes, it is embarrassing when your five year old yells out in Wal-Mart, "Mommy, I'm going to be E-Coli now, ok?"There are two-page spreads for most of the main epidemics from the past, from the Black Death to HIV-AIDS. Several pages also deal specifically with how your white blood cells defend your body. The text is divided into chunks and always associated with bright colored pictures that aren't cartoony at all, but very realistic. All in all, a very worthwhile purchase. We checked it out from the library so many times, that I decided it would make more sense to own our own copy, and we haven't regretted the decision at all.

We both completely enjoyed the book
More than my son wanted to know about diseases, but definitely worth the read. We both completely enjoyed the book!

Adults like these books too...
I first got into the Eyewitness series when I was in elementary school...now I'm nearly 21 and I still love these books! "Epidemic" is one of my favorites. I love the mix of both recent photography and older woodcuts/drawings used to illustrate such topics as historical diseases (such as leprosy), and more modern ones (like AIDS). I highly recommend "Epidemic" to anyone, young or old, who is interested in the symptoms and treatment of illness throughout history.

Excellent book; the Eyewitness Guides are brilliant reference books ...
Excellent book; the Eyewitness Guides are brilliant reference books for all ages. This title presents a fascinating, and often scary, part of life with clarity and a wide range of illustrations. I love the way the subject is brought to life by clear images and different illustrations linking past, present and future. Having studied for a Masters Degree in the history of science and medicine I recommend using various images to present and highlight many aspects of an academic subject; no need for it to be at all dry!
