Totally awesome and serves the purpose. With the cage, it's a permanent tool and works like a charm.

Bought this to test temperatures in 48' x 64" round hay bales rolled really tight. Sturdy enough to push in without bending and gives an accurate temperature WAY faster and more accurately than the high priced hay bale testers I have been using. (Make sure you get the orange guard that protects the dial to push the probe in!). After taking readings of up to 120F I could stick the tip into soft earth to bring the reading back down for the next bale and it would drop 40 degrees back below 80F in 15 seconds or so. Wish I'd found these years ago!

This is a good thermometer. It is mostly for gardeners and small farmers who have large compost piles and who need to continually take temperatures. We operate an organic urban gardens company and have compost piles that are 6-8 feet tall, 15 feet wide and 100 feet long. Temps are taken all along the length of the piles several times a week -- and so every week we use it in about 50 locations. It works perfectly and gives a fast reading.One important thing that I recommend:If you are buying a long compost thermometer and have tons of compost to make year-round, definitely get one of the frames that protect the gauge. Its name on Amazon is "REOTEMP FM-0 Probe Handle for Compost Thermometers". The frame is essential for you to quickly and easily push the thermometer into the pile, and its orange color helps you instantly locate the thermometer after you've put it in a big long pile, and have walked away from it to do other chores.

We have started composting our chicken manure at our chicken farm and needed a heavy duty thermometer to monitor the temperature in the windrows of manure. I bought the REOTEMP thermometer and it works really well. I really like how you don't have to wait very long to get a reading and it comes with a sturdy PVC sheath to store it in.

The media could not be loaded. I got this for a composting project I am involved in, involving about 2 to 3 tons of horse manure per week. Looked around, checking reviews and such, and picked the 36 inch version. Able to react very fast -- see video. Went from 70 degrees to 140 in about 35 seconds. Would recommend this product to anyone. You should buy the probe handle as well.Comes with a plastic PVC pipe protector for the 36 inch probe itself. The engineer inside me would have wanted someway to "clip-on" the pipe to the probe when not in use. I drilled a hole and ran a short bungee strap around the probe handle to the pipe, to keep the pipe and probe together when not in use and so that the probe is not bent by accident.

It might be a little on the pricey side, but really feels like a great product.
