I love this filter.
I set this up on my marine 30 gallon tank with about 60 corals in it. It has performed so well! The flow is excellent.I love the pre filter. With a reef tank, I like to remove filter floss material 2x a week. This design makes it so much easier by remove the pre filter, cleaning it out, and replacing it without having to remove everything in filter itself. I clean the entire filter out once a week. Most people don't need to do this weekly, but I recommend it if using for a reef system. The filter comes with this plastic media in the bottom that is supposed to be used as a mechanical filter and I guess biological to some extent. I threw this stuff away and added filter pad in the bottom tray that has a medium and fine grade plus a 100 micron pad on top of it. This gets tossed out and replaced each week. The supplied biological media for the second tray is really nice, but I used Seachem matrix instead- just my preference. I also add carbon, some phosguard, and purigen in separate small bags in the first tray which I replace every week. Seems to work well at keeping my aquarium water the way I want it- clean.I was hesitant to add a canister filter to my system but I love the extra mechanical and biological filtration. I also consider it a reactor for my carbon and phosguard as water flows through it at a high rate. As long as you clean this filter often (easy as can be with the pre filter) it is a great addition to a reef system. I also use a protein skimmer in my system. Also, I never get micro bubbles from this. Obviously when you start it or clean it, the air needs to get out, but after that it runs micro-bubble free.Great addition to my tank!!

the best of eheim!
I upgraded from an eheim 2217 and I am SO glad that I did. Having inlet and outflow on the top with a stop lever means that I don't have to reprime if I do filter maintenance. And the priming button makes set up so very simple. I'm used to fiddling with canister filters--chasing air bubbles, filling it in innovative ways, suctioning to get things moving--but this filter works without any of that. It's nearly silent, feels solid (won't topple if you bump it, bye 2217), and provides great filtration. I would (and have) recommended this model to all my aquatics friends My ONLY qualm is that it didn't come with enough tubing for my tall stand.

Great product but beware of ordering from here! Broken!
Product is 5 star. Hands down this is the Rolls Royce of canister filters. It is completely silent. Runs like a Prius. Easy to prime. Primed first try no problem whatsoever. Make sure your water is filled in the tank above both the intake and the outlet and make sure the flow switch is all the way open. That being said...I think there is a REASON this product is such a good deal for 99 bucks. The first unit I received the box was banged up beyond belief and it had a BROKEN CLIP and one of the trays inside was broken as well.Amazon customer service is great and they sent a replacement however... THE REPLACEMENT HAD A BROKEN CLIP ALSO!!!!! Unbelievable. I was able to repair it myself and made do... but wherever amazon is sourcing their stock from it is no good.Bottom line: this product is the best, very good quality from Eheim and works like a dream. But you might not want to order it from here. I saw another review on here where someone got one with a broken clip too. Frustrating!

Superior to non pro versions and hardly more expensive
This (pro 4 250) has the following benefits over the non-pro 150:- Easier to clean due to how the hoses mechanism is designed, and how you pull the trays up and out of the filter. No drops of water all over the place.- Much higher flow rate. This is expected, but keep in mind the price difference is negligible. Now that I've owned an eheim 150, I would never put it in anything over a 10 gallon tank even though it says its rated for 40 gallons. It's just not true if you need decent flow.- Priming pump. My god, this saves so much pain when starting your filter back up after cleaning.- A flow rate lever in the front top.- The ability to bypass the white filter when it's clogged and you are waiting for a new one. This is a dial knob.- An all in one heater of you get the "t" version (250t). You dont have to hang one in your tank. Very useful if you're going for the sleek rimless look in your tank.

Leaking after a while
Not noise, good suction power, and really easy to clean; the problem is that it is going to leak after a while. For me, it took 2 weeks for it to start leaking. I have read other reviews and i thought it was just bad luck but it looks like this model tends to have the same problem which makes me think its a manufacture error; it would be a pretty awesome filter if it didn’t have that problem.

Nice unit, priming a bit complicated first time, may be missing a filter basket cover
Great filter! Only complaint is Instructions are tiny and disjointed making first time setup and priming more difficult than they should have been. Otherwise nice unit and very quiet. I think mine may be missing a bottom filter basket cover, the tubes float all over when I take it apart to clean. If there is supposed to be a bottom filter basket cover like the top one please mail it to me.

Really, really nice filter
This thing is so beefy and well designed, much better than the earlier cylindrical models (which were also great, just not nearly as good as this is). Love the quick-dis connect hose and primer. Wouldn't hurt if it came with a little more tubing. Awesome that it comes preloaded with media.

My third Eheim
I have the big Eheim and a round Eheim canister filter on a 125. I purchased this one for a 55 gallon with a HOB and it runs great as usual. I don't like the round one as it is too finicky about putting it back together and I broke the handle once on it. This design is much better and a mini me of the big one. My big one is going on three years no issues and you have to put your hand on it to tell it's running. This one draws 12 watts and some on the market draw 90...that adds up bigtime for something running 24/7 year after year. I won't even entertain another manufacturer for canister filters...If you want the quietest, most reliable, and energy efficient filter you found it with Eheim.. If you go cheap you have been warned.
