Not Bad, Not Great
This book took an extremely long while to get the ball rolling and really draw me in. Aside from that, I really liked how well it explained questions about the Divine Dungeon universe I didn't even know I had. Most definitely looking forward to the next book to see what adventures Artorian get into next!

Slow start but so worth the time. This was really good
The main character starts off from a point of severe weakness, but kindness and the story to borrow the term cultivates into just a really great read something that when you're done reading it, you feel better for some of the quips and things spoken by the characters within it. Can't wait to open the next book

A cultivation sandwich
The media could not be loaded. Â I liked this story, but not nearly as much as the main Divine Dungeon series. If you're expecting that kind of dungeon core story, you will be disappointed. Instead it tells the tale of a side character from that series and does an origin story as well as what I'm calling a cultivation sandwich. Story, massive amounts of cultivation, story.Part of this novel was was released as a short story in a Divine Dungeon anthology collection. Like that short story the early part of this novel, the first 25%, doesn't feel like it's related to the divine dungeon universe at all. It feels more like a fantasy story. But after the 25% mark, things shift and familiar elements come into the story. Essence, cultivation, mages, dungeons, etc. Familiar groups vying to control this area and its essence. This continues with a massive info dump about cultivation, essence, corruption, and goes into a 60% period of cultivation and a little physical training. Ending with the conclusion to the main conflict with some very satisfying action. There's a huge amount of character development in the first and last quarter part of the novel with some major cultivation in between. At the about 72% mark you get back to the story and main conflict, the main character (MC) now a cultivator. If you love cultivation or essence theorizing that middle section will be really fun for you, but its kinda skippable. You could jump from about the 29% to about 74% and still get a good story. You'd just have to understand that in that section you skipped the MC became a cultivator and two years had passed.Unfortunately, this isn't a LitRPG novel. Unlike the divine dungeon series, the use of clearly understood and repeatable techniques to gain rank doesn't exist for the MC. It still exists for everyone else, but the MC uses new experimental techniques he makes up to gain his powers and there's no clear way to track his progress. Even in the story the other cultivators mention it. Instead the story is more about the theory and process of cultivation (60% of the story) which makes it more of a cultivation novel.Overall a well written cultivation novel.Score: 7.4 out of 10

Ian McKellen meets Charles Bronson
The Elder, a battle scarred academic who takes to an unmapped frontier known as The Fringe wiles away his days giving life lessons to the children of the village of Salt. He deeply loves all the children and the community but even out in the middle of no where betrayal and violence are never far.A great read and a prequel to another series so this take place in a literature based universe. Can't wait to read the next chapter.Though not overly graphic this is a bloody revenge tale so bloodshed is abundant but outside of a few descriptions the gore is low

Getting the rust off!
I definitely wasn't humming the montage song during my favourite bits. This was a refreshing change from the usual MC, I love the winter perspective.Finding a good slow build story is also pretty rare, so very happy with change of pace. Excited for book two.

I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks
Artorian was such a fun character to follow along with. His determination to save those he loves was intense felt so genuine.

Most enjoyable.
If you like Dakota Or out and other writers like him you will enjoy this book. This is a ... prequel to The Divine Dungeon series featuring Cal the dungeon. Well, sort of a prequel, it is more of a side story/backstory for Headmaster Artorian. The book is well written, and compelling, for all that there were a few scenes that actually made me leave the book in anger at the actions of a character (which really is only get another endorsement for the writing). The only thing I found frustrating with regards to the actual writing style and mechanics and whatnot was the extensive use of sound effects. It is generally viewed to be inappropriate in professional writing to use sound effects, but this story has a plethora of them. Beyond that it was pretty sound grammatically and with regards to spelling. I have no serious complaints and will definitely be getting the next book when it releases. Thank you authors for your work, and keep them coming.

4.5*
I am loving seeing Artorian’s story and how he came about. It is enthralling and a very different cultivation method to all the other books in the divine dungeon series. I did find that as someone who already knew a bit about the levelling or growth system in this world it was frustrating and slow at times but even then I was hooked. The characters the sly changes and the growth was amazing! I am highly looking forward to the next book!

First 15% of book went nowhere
Slow, unnecessarily detailed and meandering descriptions for the first 15% of the book. This could of been covered in a few pages. Felt like it was just filler and if nothing happens in this much of the book I'm not going to read any more. Sadly disappointed

Enjoyable read
I was a bit sceptical about a book with such an elderly protagonist in a litrpg. Who wants to see an old man get beat up? But I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Awesome
I don't think there's a book by this author that I haven't liked. (Dakota Krout). The character 's are flawed but more believable because of it. Real emotion in a fantastic world. I can't wait for the next.

Great book
Great read. I did start to get a little impatient when he was taking his sweet time about going after the kids but it was worth it in the end. Looking forward to the sequel.
