The material is water resistant but in a deluge water can leak through the zippers.  The zipper for the Laptop section is protected by a nice flap of material about 1" wide all around.  This flap will protect from some seepage.  In a light rain shower, you'll probably be OK.  In a downpour, you should probably be using an umbrella for both you AND the backpack!

Hi, below is what I wrote in my review of this item. Hope it helps. *******************Sooo......this bag is really awesome!!!This is why I love it:1. It carries amongst other stuff all my electronics; a portable HP U160 monitor, iPad, Lenovo Yoga2, and two bricks disguised as laptops.2. Conversion between laptop and wheeled baggage is quick and easy.3. Very well constructed.Room for Improvement:1. More padding between compartment dividers and bottom of bag2. More internal pockets for stuffThis bag is large, not so much wide as it is tall, so I was initially worried after it was delivered of it being able to fit under the seats of the CRJ-700's that I fly frequently. Because of the hard bottom of the bag used to anchor the wheels, it will not fit in the overhead bins that are roughly 10 inches tall. If you are on the Embraer models or larger, overhead carry on space will not be an issue.So in short, I was able to fit the bag under the seat, top end first, under the coach seat in front of me. Caveat, I did need to lift the top end above the carry on limit bar that is under the seat in front of me to get the bag in just a little bit further. But it worked. So if flying first class, the seats are different with more room available.In summary. If you travel a lot, and have a lot of baggage, get this bag.

Is this a lightweight backpack?

Not really a lightweight!  The framework for the telescoping handle & wheels make this a bit heavier than others, but that's the price of the convertible backpack/wheeled bag. The reason I don't mind the weight is that it never falls over when setting on the floor in the office or the airport.
