is this cable bi-directional?

Most cables and ports, like HDMI, are specifically made for ease of connection (the shape makes it almost impossible to mess up). It CAN work in both directions, but devices at both ends have to be able to switch “mode” for that to happen. I have used this without problem connecting from a JVC Everio Camera to a El Gato Capture card. Through the cable, I was able switch ports on the El Gato and send video to the camera as well as receive video to record via the El Gato. So yes - this specific cable worked in both directions for me.

What is the wire gauge for this cable?

That is a questions specifically for the manufacturer, but do note that the cable is very thin. That being said, the cable has worked properly for me although exhibited no special or outstanding performance.

Buy long...

I am not having a go at either Amazon or the manufacturer as I am sure the specified lengths are quite right. However, I wanted to connect a camera to a monitor with this cable and it is pretty tight - albeit well made.I imaging it would be great on a Small Rig sort of set up but the contracted length is only 40 cm or so out of the box and it is not keen to expand, so it puts some pressure on your camera motherboard sockets. I changed to a 2m straight cable and will keep this one for other rigging purposes.Essentailly a well made, quality product though at a fair price.

A very good, well made HDMI to mini-HDMI cable

Very good and effective HDMI to mini HDMI cable. I used this with an external portable monitor to connect to the HDMI interface of a PC. The monitor required a mini HDMI connector. The length of the cable (2m) was ideal for my use.
