Funny and informative
My students love this book! I didn’t show them the pictures and they had to guess the tide pool creature. It was a lot of fun! My favorite is the barnacle rap :)

This book has some interesting facts and cute cartoony pictures of animals that live in tide pools. Almost every page that has a poem also has a paragraph of simple animal facts on the opposite page, which is enjoyable for the kiddos. We are using it for homeschooling in conjunction with Pagoo (Hollings), for a 1st, 3rd and 4th grader, and it goes well with the material. It’s simple poetry well suited for younger grades, but the 4th grader likes it too.

My almost 6 year old is highly entertained by this book’s rhymes and she learned a lot about some tide pool and ocean creatures in the process.

There's nothing like a little rhyme time to learn about the many creatures of the sea!
Underneath the deep blue sea and lurking in its tidal pools are all kinds of interesting creatures, some that cannot be seen and others that will tickle your fancy (least ways in this book!). There are barnacles, starfish, crabs, shrimp, lobsters, sea slugs (even one named Doris), sea urchins, fish plant life and many more interesting creatures. Have you ever seen a sculpin? He is a very unusual fish that camouflages itself between the rocks and seaweed. These fish "have large, armored heads with sharp spines along the sides" and have a very different way of devouring its victims." There are many creatures that are waiting for you to learn about them in these pages, including the spiny sea urchin . . .I Love My SpinesI love my spines, I really do.If you were spiny, wouldn't you? They're long and sharp and very green. My mother says to keep them clean. My friends have claws and arms and feet, but spines are different. Spines are neat.Somewhere past the waterline, there's a mammal called the porcupine. Its spines are really cool, I bet,but I think spines are better wet. There's nothing like a little rhyme time to learn about the many creatures of the sea. The poems are amusing and will give some youngsters a case of the giggles. The art work was vibrant and the googly-eyed creatures were very appealing and quite zany, especially when they were going after their lunches. Each poem is accompanied by a factual paragraph. For example, we learn things such as "Lobsters are eating machines. They crush food with their heavy front claw and chop it up with their smaller one." In the back of the book is a glossary and additional recommended book and web site resources to explore.
