Review: Love this story. Arrived promptly and well packaged. Review: Lapierre's novel is a remarkable narrative of the growth of the artist struggling to succeed against a father's envy, a rapist's lies, and a husband's self centered mediocrity. Artemisia's triumph is all the more startling because of the forces and circumstances with which she had to contend. The texture of Lapierre's plot is enriched by details of the artist's craft, the world of the business of art, and the processes of law as well as the variegated details of the historical dimensions of the seventeenth century. Liz Heron's translation is fluent and a pleasure to read. I recommend this novel to anyone interested in art, art history, and the triumph of the indomitable spirit.

C’était pour un cadeau. La personne à qui je l’ai offert et grand amateur d’art et d’histoire, c’est un livre très intéressant ayant lu moi-même cet ouvrage.

One of the best biographies I have read for years. Exquisitely written, meticulously researched, it makes you feel as if you were there. Artemisia emerges as a compelling figure, as ambitious as she was talented, with the drive and determination to survive a public scandal as a seventeen-year old which should have destroyed her. This made all the more remarkable her dazzling success as THE first great female painter of the Renaissance. Talk about defying the odds. This is an uplifting story in so many ways but it does not set out to be not does it feel worthy in its intent or feel. It simply draws you in.
