Max Factory Masterpiece: Black Lotus
This is a review for the Max Factory Figma Series: Black LotusNow to begin: I'm not a huge fan of Accel World. It was an anime that I didn't really connect with and I felt the characters and premise were just kinda weak. I did however stick it out because I liked a few of the duel avatar designs the characters were given in the plot's MMOFG: "Brain Burst" and that very short list was spearheaded by none other than Black Lotus, I mean, look at her! It's like a mecha crossed with Edward Scissorhands. Others I liked were: the Blue King and his twin samurai bodyguards/lieutenants, Cyan Pyle and that's really about it. So needless to say, when I came across this Figma I instantly hit: Add to Cart.Moving on to the figure, I'd say the pics are pretty much dead-on to what you get but what it doesn't really tell you outright is that you almost get TWO figures for the price of one. When you first open the box, the figure you are greeted by is Black Lotus in her stand by mode which is her main body with upper and mid torso connected to her abdomen and her sort of like knife blade decorative skirt which she has draped around her hips (FYI it's supposed to be loose fitting instead of fixed to her body, I think to flex and work with wide leg stances) and fitted with all stunted blade appendages including: arms, legs, head mast, shoulders and these like skirt ornaments on the front and back. Then, packaged immediately to her right and left and with the rest tucked in behind her figure mold are the parts for her Active Mode or the "I'm gonna cut you, fool..." kill everything in sight mode which pretty much massively lengthens and adds some purple highlights to every bladed body part mentioned earlier. If you've seen the anime you know exactly what this looks like.Altogether I personally feel once you pop in the active mode parts there is pretty much NO reason to ever switch back. She just looks hundreds of times better in full battle deployment but that's a personal preference. This is not to say the parts for Stand By mode are built to a lower specification because they are not. Every piece in this box shares the same attention to detail, clean lines in the sculpt and great paintwork all around. I just like the Active Mode because both in the anime and just looking at her, you can outright tell this figure means business. As for general quality of the Figma it's possible I got a very good batch release because her joints were tight and precise while still maintaining that soft and responsive feel. Basically they just seemed crisper in the movement than the other Figma's I've received thus far. Also, the trickier swap in parts like the head, shoulders and skirt flanges popped in with an audible click so there was no question it was positively locked into place and even the Figma multi-joint stand was tight and held position while I fiddled with putting her into a few poses before setting her up for cabinet display. Overall just a really solid feel to this Figma's build and that was a VERY welcome experience.Next: articulation, paint work and general sculpt/ detailing. In regards to articulation she has, as usual with Figma series releases, very good range of movement. Overall it is about on par with most Figmas but her torso really surprised me. It appears she has two chest ball joints hidden in her body, this is in addition to the ball joint in her hips/waist and allows even more of those ever so precise torso twist adjustments you can add to her poses without looking unnatural to the build of the Figma or to a body in general since this is the only part that looks even mildly human from the front. This inclusion of a second chest joint was a very nice touch and I haven't seen it before but it did make moving some of her limbs rather tricky because one or the other of the chest joints would bend unnecessarily while first loosening her up for her initial poses. Another thing I noticed, her head doesn't seem to move vertically, at least not much but that could have been a tight joint on my figure. Otherwise there's not much to say about articulation. She does, obviously, lack feet and hands so there's that but considering the entire length of her entire legs and arms are her main weapons it doesn't seem out of place, since that's part of the character design. In general, she's like any other Figma with a nice surprise second chest joint, but really she lives up to the normal expectations.Paintwork is in a word: PERFECT. In the anime she is just all light absorbing black with some purple on her. I can't really remember if she had a gloss shine since there isn't much direct sunlight in Brain Burst but I don't think she did. Thus, Max Factory's use of a very beautiful matte black paint was a GOOD move on their part. The paint is clean and has a great texture to the touch, doesn't retain finger prints (THANK YOU!) and overall just really works with how the character was drawn originally. Her highlights are a mix of purple paint and clear purple plastic. Overall the shades of purple are actually pretty close to each other in the right light. However, because the backdrop for the model is the matte black paint the clear purple sections have a seemingly darker saturation most of the time you might spend looking at the figure but it's not all too distracting. The details of the clear purple plastic most importantly are crisp and do not show hints of excess plastic from where it was cut or stamped out nor rough edges or clouding. It shows that the figure detail was just on a very very high level of artistic attention during crafting. I've said it before in other reviews but I'll say it again here: I have a hard time really absorbing this level of quality in a mass produced, SMALL size product. It's just so splendid it feels like it was crafted by gnomes or something. After the general paint work and assembly we come to the sculpt and I'm not really sure what to put here. Exquisite? Superb? Nothing quite captures the feeling of just total satisfaction I have with this figure. The level of fine detail and precision lines, the full dimensions of the characer were translated so precisely and sculpted to such exacting levels this figure stands as the hallmark of my Figma collection so far. It is my favorite and not even my most expensive purchase. I can't really say much on the sculpt other than, it was proportionately scaled correctly and every small detail you expect was translated over to the Figma. She is in a word: PERFECT and I don't think there are any other Figmas I have or have ordered that come close to her level of perfection. Maybe Yui Takamura from the Muv Luv-Alternative: Total Eclipse series in regards to her crisp paintwork. But sculpt-wise: Black Lotus wins by landslide.Final Recommendation: Buy, Buy, BUY!!! If you like Accel World and like Figmas you probably already have her so why are you reading reviews? If you like Accel World and are not usually an action figure fan, I will warn you the level of quality on this Figma will be like injecting heroin into your veins and start a craving you never knew you had. Heck, I don't even really like Accel World and I love this Figma more than any other action figure I own. Finally, even if you don't care about the anime but like cool mecha/power armor inspired designs, pick her up anyways. Her general design reminds me of the Jehuty style mecha of the Zone of the Enders game. She's pretty affordable still as far as Figma's go and she's easily the hallmark entry in the Accel World series released so far unless you're a sucker for shiny metal then Silver Crow is the only way to go. I for one, HATED his pathetic character but will likely get him because he's freaking cheap right now and also so that BL won't be sulking in a corner, alone and not even able to shake hands with the other Figmas in my collection cabinet.

Great figure! Looks awesome!
This is an amazing figure! Perfect for accel world fans or just fans of anime and robot style figures. The body is made up of matte black parts, legs, arms etc. with lovely purple bits like the visors and shoulder joints. There is such a large number of extra body parts that come with this figure, so you can transform black lotus into her attack form (elongated arm blades etc.) or leave her in the standard form. The attack form looks especially awesome, with her head (ears?) and legs having clear purple bits which look great with the right lighting behind (e.g. on a windowledge). The stand is almost essential for this figure due to the nature of the legs, unless you are leaning it on something or supporting it with another figure. Shipping time was on the quick side of the expected delivery, and the product was packaged really well and securely. Overall this figure looks amazing, definitely one of my favourites, and it goes especially well with silver crow (sold separately).
