The Split: The most gripping, twisty thriller of the year (A Richard & Judy Book Club pick)

Chilling, atmospheric and adventurous!
The Split by Sharon Bolton was among top 5 thrillers that I read in 2020 and I'm so glad that I had the pleasure to read it. What a chilling, atmospheric, adventurous ride it was! Sharon has always been my goto author when it comes to slow burn, psychological thriller to keep you up all night, but this book has reached a different level even to the author's brilliant writing. I was awestruck and completely out of guess when I finally finished the book!Felicity is running from something or someone? We don't know exactly what. But she's now in the remote town of Antarctica where there's nothing but white ice everywhere but our Felicity isn't afraid of the white wilderness. In fact, she finds her solitude here. Almost enjoys it. Until, she figures that she's been found and have to run again but where to? She's already at the end of the world, quite literally! In Cambridge, the Backstory introduces us to therapist Joe who has his own fears and a regretful past he has to face while he meets the curious, anxious Felicity who after found injured and almost unconscious becomes Joe's patient. The events in Cambridge will later tell us more about why and who let Felicity to where she is now but that will have to wait. Because Joe's mom, the local Police is searching for a killer who preys on homeless people. So many stories tangled and we have many narrators who would tell strange versions, some captivating, some baffling and some to give you the creeps! As I said before, there is so much more to this book than I can do justice in a review but it's worth dying for. The Split is by far my favorite of the author, but she's also ready with a new book in 2021 which I can't wait to read.

Twists and turns to match the calving glaciers and rotating ice-bergs!
A tense and thrilling plot with twists and turns to match the calving glaciers and rotating ice-bergs of the South Georgia island setting! I was hooked right away by the opening of the book. I was immediately in a world of crunching snow and ice, eerie echoes, cold, frosty air and captured by a ridiculous amount of tension and mystery. The book is not quite as it seems, however, and in Part 2 we're suddenly in Cambridge, England in the time period leading up to Felicity's assignment to South Georgia Island. We're exposed to multiple characters and interactions between them in counselling sessions, while helping the homeless, at home, at work, out for dinner and leaving me at times wondering who was who (literally and metaphorically to perhaps give you a clue). At the same time, there's murder, confusion, memory-loss and a traumatic past. The author has weaved a whole set of circumstances together in a very clever way, that left me guessing what might be going on until the very end. It's hard to write much more without giving some critical points away which might spoil your enjoyment of the book. Instead, I suggest you fix the crampons onto your shoes tightly and hang on for the ride

A thrilling read
A psychological thriller set in the beautiful but desolate and dangerous South Georgia Island near Antarctica, this is one of those stories where the environment is itself a character and a catalyst for all the action.Felicity Lloyd is a glaciologist, working on researching the melting waters of the glacier and plug holes that are draining the lake formed by them with a small team in the remote island. She feels far safer in this place than her home in England where her ex husband Freddie is out of prison and on the lookout for her. She lives in fear that he will find her even though she has practically escaped to where the world ends and then the unthinkable happens and spying him on the last ship to come to the island for months, she goes on the run.In a parallel narrative set 9 months ago, Felicity is seeing Joe Grant, a psychiatrist who is himself recovering from a violent attack by one of the homeless people he tried to help. Felicity has been having some trouble she needs help with and Joe tries to be that person who can help her. Both the narratives converge brilliantly back in South Georgia where in an action packed climax, Freddie, Joe, Felicity and the rest of the team on the island find themselves grappling with the immense power of nature more than each other. Shifting glaciers, cracks in the ice, ice blocks falling into the water, the melting water rushing through the crevices and above all, the numbing cold accompany the final reveal of the truth. It's a very fast read as it holds you in its thrall throughout whether it is Felicity's fear or nature's uncertainty or the mystery at the core of it all that connects all the disparate threads. A chilling thriller indeed!

Addictive suspense in an icy wilderness
Another super suspenseful thriller from Sharon Bolton! And this one is set in the icy wilds of South Georgia, an island in the Southern Atlantic. However, first we meet a number of important characters in Cambridge where this tale begins:Felicity Lloyd is a glaciologist, working for the British Antartic Survey carrying out research on the annual melting of the glaciers. Before she left Cambridge for South Georgia, she was convinced someone was stalking her and coming to kill her. Now she feels safe, hidden in South Georgia where only a few organised tourist boats are allowed to stop for a short time.Joe Grant is a psychologist called in to see Felicity in hospital after she was found bleeding and distressed outside at night with no memory of what happened to her. She agrees to meet with Joe for a few consultations before she goes to South Georgia. He is a compassionate man who also runs a free clinic for the homeless, even though he was recently attacked by one of his patients.Delilah Jones is Joe's mother and a Detective Inspector. She's been looking into the death of a young homeless woman, Bella Barnes and the disappearance of another, Ezzy Sheeran. The local homeless sleeping on the streets are uneasy and worried about someone called Shane who likes to watch them while they sleep.Freddie is a man with a past. He's been in prison and he's looking for Felicity.Felicity's past will eventually catch up with her when characters all meet up before the end of the novel in an explosive race for survival. The setting of South Georgia is magnificent with its towering and dangerous glaciers. The characters are complex and fully formed and the plot is as full of surprising twists as you would hope, with an unpredictable ending. Clever, intense and suspenseful, Bolton has given us another addictive thriller that begs us to read just one more chapter.

Sharon Bolton gives her best - an unputdownable thriller...
... I simply HAD to read through til the very end - in one night!Felicity is a glacier specialist. She works on the remote South Georgia Island near the Antarctica. She moved there to flee from a man called Freddy, who may be her husband - or not. She went to Joe, a still somehow after an attack damaged psychologist, whose mother Delilah works for the Cambridge Police solving murders. And Felicity is right on her radar for the killings of two homeless women. Or not - because Felicity has a very rare psychological syndrome... But Joe and his mother have to cross half the world to get to her. As does Freddie...Got it for only 99 Eurocents on Amazon.it... and like I wrote, I started to read and simply could not stop. The scenario on South Georgia is striking, but the scenes set in Cambridge are very gripping, too. A very strong story about a woman who as a three-year-old had been dealt worst cards - and adapted to the situation. Which not everybody may have mastered...I personally can only recommend it strongly.

Excellent thriller
