When my boyfriend first introduced me to Mysterious Girlfriend X, I didn’t know what to expect. I had questions—so many questions. Like, “Why is she licking his drool?” “Why am I watching this?” and most importantly, “Why can’t I stop?”But somehow, between the bizarre saliva-sharing and emotionally charged scissor-snipping, I got hooked. Beneath the strange premise is a surprisingly tender exploration of intimacy, trust, and adolescent love—just with… a very niche delivery system.I ended up buying him the Blu-ray bundled with the full manga set for his birthday, and it arrived just in time—perfect for him to relax and binge during his chemo recovery. Watching him enjoy it reminded me why this oddball anime is so special. It’s not just weird for weird’s sake—it’s intimate, vulnerable, and weirdly poetic.So yes, it’s unconventional. A beautiful offbeat anime romance.
Slightly maladjusted male student Akira finds his strange and antisocial female classmate Mikoto alone, asleep at her desk after school, drooling. He impulsively feels compelled to taste her saliva, beginning an addiction to it that imparts both wholesome desires and pervy thoughts as the two begin a halting and touching romantic relationship full of loyalty tests, misunderstandings and real progress. Mikoto is a girl of strange habits and mysterious abilities who carries a pair of scissors tucked in the waistband of her panties and can, in almost supernatural way, destroy, whirlwind fashion, almost any object. Fine dub job on this blu-ray only, which covers, in dedicated form, about the first 4 volumes of the 6-volume manga English series. You will want to read the final 2 volumes of the manga, at least, to see how this story comes to a satisfying conclusion, or better yet, read the whole manga set, which is definitely worth your time and money.
