Beautiful stories but the book has major failings for an Urdu learner
I feel this book represents a wasted opportunity. It contains some beautiful, presumably traditional stories in Urdu, and the idea of looking for a different method of language learning is worth considering, although personally I feel that without explanations of grammar points it could only be one part of learning a language rather than the single way. For me, the problem the book that there is no consistent method of transliterating Urdu into English. This should have been clearly set out before the story texts were given. For example, aspirated Urdu sounds are sometimes shown with an ‘h’, sometimes not. Sometimes unaspirated sounds are shown with an ‘h’. Vowel sounds are represented with no particular system. so that for instance in a single line an English “ay’ sound can be represented as ‘ay’ or ‘ee’. Another problem, for me as a beginner (the book is supposed to be for beginners) is that nowhere are we given a good English translation of the stories. I occasionally found that even with English words given below the Urdu, I could not make sense of a line. It is possible to download MP3 audio versions of the stories. These do help - without them I would have given up on this book altogether. However the readings are fairly fast for beginners, and slowing the recordings down inevitably distorts the language. Subtleties of pronunciation are not always easy for a beginner to pick out of a spoken text. I would very much like to see this book republished after much more care and thought have been given to it.

Total failure of a book
Dont waste your money on the Kindle version as the formatting totally fails and makes it totally unreadable.

Kindle buyers beware
This is a great idea for a book, but a warning to buyers of the Kindle edition: on my iPad the formatting completely collapses, so it’s unusable. I guess I’ll have to buy the print version, but it isn’t really what I wanted.
