See it again, notice more details and enjoy
You have probably seen it, but have you seen it recently ? There are many details to absorb, with a fast moving although predictable plot. Nevertheless, various nuances appear each time I watch this movie. First of all, you will have to suspend your disbelief. Would even a wealthy father like Dr Houseman give his daughter hundreds of dollars without knowing what it was for, the equivalent of thousands today? Would a young woman like Baby be able to sneak around with Johnny in a small resort like that, full of busybodies, and keep it a secret for more than 24 hours? Apparently as others have written, there are some anachronisms in the film. To me, they were not glaring. Baby's mohair sweaters convinced me we were definitely in a different era. The activity list alone, was enough to set me in the past. Dance lessons, charades, bingo, arts and crafts, yawn.....and where is the booze in this movie? Alcohol is curiously absent, for a group of semi rowdy young adults. But I digress.. The universal emotional tug of this movie is that it will remind you of something, or someone. Most likely your own coming of age story. Which probably didn't happen in the Catskills, or at a summer resort. But it doesn't matter, because everyone has a season where they discover not just themselves, but also some fundamental truths about life. That people and things are often not what they seem. That life requires embracing tough ambiguities. So suspend your disbelief, ignore the inconsistencies and enjoy the steam, the dancing and the music. Most young people have a season, often a summer, where life's mysteries are suddenly thrust upon them and innocence is lost. This is the story of "Baby" Houseman growing up the summer before she starts college. While she loses her virginity, there is more to the story than that. She also learns that everything she has ever been taught is subject to scrutiny and often wrong. This movie will bring back memories even if you never vacationed in the Catskills with your parents. Dirty Dancing manages to weave several universal coming of age themes into an almost believable story. Plus some really cool looking dancing. Swayze and Grey are both about 10 years older than the characters they portray, but they pull it off and their chemistry sizzles. Great music, too, both the oldies featured and the soundtrack written for the film. I know there are people that have seen this movie thousands of times. While I wouldn't do that, I did enjoy picking up on some small details that I never noticed before. Like leaves falling pretty furiously in the background in one scene. The movie was shot in the early fall and some leaves had to be spray painted green, as well. Probably the theme that resonates with me the most is the dawning of Baby's moral understanding. She has been taught to think in terms of black and white, good vs evil, however many people are not exactly what they seem and there are a lot of incongruities in life. 5 stars for the memories. It is not great cinema, but great to watch again, even if you have seen it several times. Even if you didn't experience anything exactly like this, you will still remember your youth.

I disliked it because it stopped working. Won't play, player doesn't recognize it, neither does the PC. All other DVDs still work in my player and PC, just this DVD gives me an absurd error. Strange. Really frustrated.

La compré por nostalgia y no defrauda. Aunque sea edición UK, se ve perfectamente. La música y las escenas no pasan de moda.
