Review: A little drive that can read a lot - Ordered this as they're getting hard to find in the wild, what with basically every manufacturer ditching optical drives. I have a huge movie collection, so bought this in order to have a back up drive in case my primary ones fail. It was still the suggested/expected price instead of the sky-high prices you see for these, so I jumped on the opportunity. I hadn't really looked into this drive in detail other than knowing it could be used for 4k discs once re-flashed (which I can confirm), so I was surprised to see that it has a micro USB plug on the drive side; not saying that's a bad thing, just unexpected and seemingly-outdated for a drive manufactured last month (I had to do a double-take that it was that "fresh"!). Seems to connect without issue and work, with 4-6x read speeds being seen during movie rips (this is really the only benchmark I care about). Discs seem to be read and ejected without concern. It's a slim drive, so it feels quite fragile compared to a full-sized equivalent that you'd mount in a computer case, but from my experience units like this can still take a beating, so I expect this to be the case here (although I'll still treat it gently). Zero experience with the write abilities for this drive, as I haven't written to optical media in years. ## Features - Drive Type: External Slim Portable Blu-ray Writer - Interface: USB 2.0 (480 Mb/s) - Buffer Memory: 4 MB - Write: CD-R: 24X, CD-RW: 16X, DVDR SL/DL: 8X, DVDRW: 8X/6X, DVD-RAM: 5X, BD-R SL/DL: 6X, BD-RE SL/DL/TL: 2X - Read: CD-R/RW/ROM: 24X, DVD-ROM: 8X, BD-ROM SL/DL: 6X.Sustained transfer rate BD-ROM 26.97 MB/s ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | ASIN | B011327QXC | | Additional Features | Blu-Ray Disc | | Best Sellers Rank | #54,070 in Computers ( See Top 100 in Computers ) #20 in External Blu-ray Drives | | Brand | LG | | Built-In Media | External Slim Portable Blu-ray Writer, USB Cable | | Cache Memory Installed Size | 4 | | Color | Black | | Compatible Devices | PCs, laptops with USB port | | Connectivity Technology | USB | | Customer Package Type | Standard Packaging | | Customer Reviews | 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,316 Reviews | | Data Transfer Rate | 1 Gigabits Per Second | | Enclosure Material | Plastic | | Form Factor | Slim | | Hard Disk Description | Slim, Portable | | Hard Disk Interface | USB 2.0/3.0 | | Hardware Interface | USB | | Hardware Platform | PC | | Hardware interface | USB | | Hardware platform | PC | | Item Dimensions L x W x H | 14.5L x 15.5W x 1.5H centimeters | | Item Weight | 0.6 Pounds | | Manufacturer | LG | | Media Speed | 7.92 MB/s (BD-R), 2.64 MB/s (BD-RE), 10.56 MB/s (DVD+RW), 7.92 MB/s (DVD-RW), 6.6 MB/s (DVD-RAM), 3.6 MB/s (CD-R), 2.4 MB/s (CD-RW) | | Mfr Part Number | WP50NB40 | | Model Name | WP50NB40 | | Model Number | WP50NB40 | | Number of Packs | 1 | | Operating System | Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Vista, Windows XP | | Optical Storage Read Speed | 8X DVD | | Optical Storage Write Speed | 8x | | Optical storage reading speed | 8X DVD | | Optical storage writing speed | 8x | | Read Speed | 3.6 Megabytes Per Second | | Special features | Blu-Ray Disc | | Specific Uses For Product | personal, gaming, business | | UPC | 719192634879 | | Unit Count | 1 Count | ## Product Details - **Brand:** LG - **Hardware interface:** USB - **Optical storage reading speed:** 8X DVD - **Optical storage writing speed:** 8x - **Special features:** Blu-Ray Disc ## Images ![LG Electronics 6X Blu Ray Writer 8X DVD Writer +/- RW USB 2.0 Super Multi Ultra Slim Portable with M-DISC Support (Black) WP50NB40 - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51Os6QkvPsL.jpg) ![LG Electronics 6X Blu Ray Writer 8X DVD Writer +/- RW USB 2.0 Super Multi Ultra Slim Portable with M-DISC Support (Black) WP50NB40 - Image 2](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/91QvqrMlIRL.jpg) ![LG Electronics 6X Blu Ray Writer 8X DVD Writer +/- RW USB 2.0 Super Multi Ultra Slim Portable with M-DISC Support (Black) WP50NB40 - Image 3](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71uhAtRSZdL.jpg) ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ LG Blue Ray *by L***O on 31 July 2022* Excellent product ! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A little drive that can read a lot *by H***R on 30 June 2026* Ordered this as they're getting hard to find in the wild, what with basically every manufacturer ditching optical drives.
