I use this for a variety of things, such as keeping a power lead attached to a wooden desk top ready for use (I don't want to screw anything to it) and so on. It's not so good for really fine fabrics, such as nylon, but on hard materials (and I'm sure the rough underside of a carpet) it works really well. I used it to attach foam rubber feet to my balcony pots, and a year later they're still firmly attached, so it's durable outdoors, too. Removing the backing can be tricky as it's so sticky, but I get it started with the end of a Stanley knife blade, then peel it off. I find that cutting it with a Stanley blade is better, too, as scissors crush during cutting, and end up sticking to the tape before you're finished. I wasn't successful with my kayak seat, but it's still firmly attached to the plastic seat well and it looks like I'll need to use a chemical spray to remove it from there, it's so strongly attached, despite a year of sea and river water! I always keep a roll handy, as it's so useful when you need strong adhesion.
