A clean cozy mystery with all the quirky, loveable characters you've come to expect in a Kathi Daley mystery
I love all of the characters and small towns that populate the mind of author Kathi Daley. Add in helpful, perhaps psychic cats, and she can not go wrong! When it is not tourist season, Madrona Island is truly a small town where everyone seems to know everyone else's business, and all about each other's likes, dislikes, dating and even medical history.Caitlin Hart and her best friend Tara own a multipurpose store at the site of the ferry launch which bring tourists to the island. It is a coffee shop/book store which showcases cats for adoption. There are a large number of feral cats on the island and the Mayor, not being a feline aficionado, made it legal for inhabitants to harm the cats. Caitlin and her grandmother run a sanctuary for cats to try and protect them. The cats not being protected by the duo tend to gather at an area called The Hollow. "While most of the island's residents stop short of referring to the Hollow as haunted, it is wideley accepted that not everything that happens there can be explained."Something else than can not be logically explained is how Tansy and Bella, two local women rumored respectfully to be witches, who "know things that can't be empirically explained."Recently Tansy has been sending along feline helpers to Cait. This time it is the adorable, sleek, black haierd Icabod, who does things on his own schedule. After finding two members of the town council dead, and a third, Cait's own grandmother, missing, this case seems too personal and close to home. The only clue that makes no sense is a black poker chip with each body.Besides the murder, Cait and Cody's relationship moves to a different level and her sister Siobhan arrives back on the island with secrets of her own.How long will she be staying?Being October, you can't think amy small town would pass up the opportunity for a Halloween and ghoul themed fundraiser. While Cait got to play a zombie at the haunted house, it was not a major segment of the story, which disappointed me somewhat. This is still a clean cozy mystery with all the quirky, loveable characters you've come to expect in a Kathi Daley mystery but we are beginning to see more romantic action. The clues will keep you guessing until the end and if you don't want a spoiler - stop reading now.SPOILER -Cait's grandmother returns home alive and well.
