Buy it for the gloves and smoker
It's really odd but these are the highest-quality gloves I have seen, with thick rough denim-like fabric and solid yet flexible leather. They don't sell this model of gloves separately (similar ones with thin crappy fabric but identical markings are sold basically everywhere). Most of the rest of thjs stuff is garbage. The smoker is average, with real leather & wood and perfectly-acceptable stainless steel. The air-circulation disk/table thing inside will flip into the wrong position every time and I suggest stuffing steel wool in there to hold it in place. The decapping knife looks like some ancient serrated warrior's blade and it's sharp. I use it for everything but what it's designed for (buy a heated knife for actual decapping). The frame lifter is put together backwards by the factory, and you will likely break one of the springs while trying to fix it. It doesn't matter though because everyone seems to stop using then after the third or fourth time they pick one up.The J-hook and traditional hive tool are just like every other set of hive tools you will get for free with nearly every bee-related purchase you ever make. Every beekeeper I know has a pile of them. Solid quality. The queen marking tool works just fine until you pick up a generic one-handed queen-catcher tool and see how much better it is (and that will work until you pick up a Mann Lake one and realize that there is a HUGE quality difference, and the generic ones are awful by comparison. And the first time you accidentally kill a queen with one, you have eliminated the seven dollar savings that made you choose the generic version). The rest of the stuff is just random clutter they threw in the box so they could call it a variety pack. You will throw most of it away (and then re-purchase half of it back). There is a single beetle trap, which is far less than anyone needs, and a single honey gate which is the kind of thing only needed by people who buy hundreds of dollars worth of extracting equipment - and will thus buy their own honey gates. A strainer bag that's probably the wrong size, two other bad decapping tools (though one makes a fine drone-killing fork), and various other bits and bobs. But really - the gloves are fantastic. I'd pay thirty bucks for those gloves any day. I just bought my SECOND Honey Lake starter kit for $39 just to get another pair of those gloves. I'll get some use out of the smoker (smokers only last 1-2 seasons and aren't really a permanent tool anyway, so another will come in handy, and that second knife may make a good Halloween prop. The rest is just the stuff one must deal with in order to get those gloves.I usually wear a large men's glove, and these fit great. The fabric feels like Carhartt Detroit denim jacket's outer layer, and the leather has never let a stinger through.Consider this a $25 set of gloves, a $10 smoker, and a pile of junk.

Good beginner kit
I think this is a good starter kit for a decent price. Everything will last a couple years and it gives people a chance to see what they would want to upgrade. Definitely recommend for a newbie.

Get the tools you need at a great price!
I'm a newbie and I priced some of the tools I'd need separately and they added up. This little kit gave me things I know I needed and some I'm glad that I had on hand! You can't beat the price and I was surprised with the quality. They were the same ones I could buy separately, but just one tool was 1/3 of the price that I paid for this set. A friend of mine lost all her tools during a move and she thought this set was a great buy and bought it to replace the ones she'd lost.I'll Bee happy with this set!
