A fascinating insight into Bob Mason’s life after Vietnam
It wasn’t a quick read, but it was one that was compelling. A really interesting follow-up to Chickenhawk, which I would recommend to read first.

Outstanding
This was a surprisingly good read. I think the original Chickenhawk was one of the best books to come out of Vietnam and it was difficult to imagine that an account of Robert Mason's civilian life could come close. But in fact, Mr Mason pulls it off. His story is almost as eventful as Vietnam and Mr Mason has a unique and engaging style. On reacching the end of the book, the overiding thought I had was that his wife, Patience, must be one amazing lady.

Re_read
I read this after re_reading Chickenhawk, a book I enjoyed reading some 30years ago. I found this just as enjoyable. For me it got a bit slow at time time of his capture and arrest. Picking up again when he gets to prison. The discretion of the of prison life and the stories of other inmates, his rise through the prison system and how he past his time was fascinating. His acceptance of his crime and that he should be punished was a breath of fresh air. I would recommend this to anybody who is interested in the Vietnam war era.

What to say
I first read Chickenhawk years ago. I had just finished my time in the army. I identified with Bob; though our military roles, and country of service are very different. Our thoughts on why military services are sent to war however are equally cynical. This book doesn’t just tidy up the lose ends of Chickenhawk. It stands alone as a superb read. The depth of feelings, transparency and naked honesty makes you wince at times, but the pages just keep turning.

A welcome companion volume.
I ddint even know this book existed until recently, shame on me. As someone who has bought Chickenhawk half a dozen times and lost them due to loaning it to people who didn't return them (grrr), it was nice to hear Mr Mason's update. Readers of Chickenhawk will recall the final brief pages of the book where he skims over events since leaving the army, and this book expands this section. There is a lot in it as well. The thing I took from it the most is that the real "star" of the book was Bob's wife, Patience. Never was there a more aptly named person. I hope that their lives have levelled out a little in the years since, and they are living comfortable and content lives, they have certainly earned them.

Catching up with an old friend
I first read chickens when it came out and I was a student overdosing on Vietnam books. It was the best and I've recommended it countless times in the subsequent 30+ yearsWith changing technology it's eAsier to read something on A whim and I found myself back in Vietnam with the Cav.I'm in my fifties now with many more life experiences and it affected me even more deeply than before.Once again new techno!ogy intervened and I became aware of the companion book. Well worth a read.Banco to chickenhawk's papillon

Worth the wait
Read Chickenhawk years ago. Then again and again! Superb book in class of its own. Wanted the sequel but whenever I found it, it was a collectors item and very expensive. Now it has appeared on Kindle, I'm very grateful. If you've read the first book, then this is a must. However, I don't think it works as a stand-alone book. Read Chickenhawk first.

You could not make this up
I really enjoyed this book, it was great to read about Bob's life and tribulations in full after his military service had finished. The American law system appears to be an ass. If you have not read Chickenhawk then read that before you read this book, you will not be disappointed.
