Updated movie version, mostly faithful to the book
I read the book as a child, reread it as an adult, and so watched this family movie version. The movie has been updated from the early 1960s book, so now as a mid-1990s movie, it is multicultural, Ole Golly is just βGolly,β and a few scenes have been excised or changed. (Ole Golly is still Ole Golly in the credits, interestingly enough, and in the book, a scene where Harriet is upset and repeatedly crying for Ole Golly as been changed to Oh Golly. This is just a curious change that readers of the book will note.)It is now dated as a 1990s movie, for example none of the characters have cell phones. Kids play and act like kids and are not glued to screens. It is a reminder of the way things used to be. There are no personal computers in this movie either. Home PCs were certainly around then, but had not yet grown to be a household item in every home, and most people did not yet have Internet. There is a scene with Harriet typing on an actual typewriter. The movie itself is ok. The kids got bored in the middle and it dragged a bit. Harriet still writes honest unfiltered notes in her notebook, the notebook gets into the hands of other kids, and she pays a price for that. She sneaks into other peoples houses and eavesdrops on them, and this is presented in a matter-of-fact, kind of ok manner. The movie and book both illustrate how children can be quite mean to one another, but the movie in particular illustrates that even kids can have a change of heart and to be forgiving and make up with one another.

Definitely not P.C
This was one of my favorite movies growing up. It's an excellent story with some problematic language (suicide, bullying).

Classic
I loved this film when i was little so much that i started to spy on my neighbours from my roof window!! Watching it again recently made me realise it's not as good as it was when i was a kid. However i still had a laugh watching it and will definitely keep it for my children to watch one day!! DVD was in good condition :)

My 7 year old loves this DVD although she doesn't understand all the references in it the story is clear enough for her to enjoy it with her 10 year old cousin, they loved watching it together and talked about it all day then watched it again the next day!
