Lee Strasberg, Ruth Gordon, Janet Leigh. David and Becky Rosen have lived in their Coney Island neighborhood for nearly all of the 50 years they've been married, while running their own small cafeteria business. Clearly the neighborhood is changing and their children want them to move. But when a local thug demands "protection" money, David stays and fights back. 1979/color/98 min/NR/fullscreen.

Excellent acting, authentic New York settings, emotional drama
Superb acting by Lee Strasberg and Ruth Gordon. A very touching emotional film about a caring nurturing couple who become terrorized by their changing neighborhood.

A must-ride roller coaster of raw emotion.
This film has to be seen to be believed, more talent in one film than you would ever hope for. Lee Strasberg, Ruth GOrdon, and Janet Leigh in Coney Island dealing with 70's changing racial paterns, a street gang, and personal health issues and age. Starts out light, and opens your heart to what must be the greatest couple on film celebrating their 50th in a world where hatred is not hidden. In my top three movies of all time.

Huge disappointment
Lee Strasberg and Ruth Gordon are two of my favorite actors. I put off ordering this movie for a long time because of the relatively high cost, and I couldn't wait to watch it once I received it. I don't know that I have ever been more disappointed in a movie. (Not that it was the actors' faults; I blame it on the writer and director -- written by Stephen Verona and Leigh Chapman and directed by Verona.) It was so poorly written and so trite, no actors could have done anything with that script. And only a director who wrote the script could have let it pass without a major rewrite. I know it has received good reviews so far, but don't let the great cast and touching subject matter fool you. It's a stinker.

A peek into today, from the 1970's
This is an uneven movie. It has some fine understated acting, but the dialogue is sometimes heavy-handed or artificial. It's like the screenwriter is worried we won't get the point unless the actor says exactly what the point is. Some of the earnest speeches reminded me of morality tales like "Reefer Madness", but--don't get me wrong--it's not that camp and not that fun.The most fascinating thing is just realizing that this is a movie that would never be made now. Elderly Jews are being terrorized by a gang of territorial, black thugs. There is one sympathetic black couple to offer as contrast, but it almost doesn't matter. We see the neighborhood deteriorating due to gang violence, and the movie just acts as a signpost or pointer to everything we already know. The worst thing to look out for is the subplot involving a musician (that part's questionable) grandson that wants to be free from family constraints, smoke pot, ride motorcycles, etc. That's not a cliche is it? There are many other cliches to be had, but still, this is a compelling movie. I think it's because the subject matter is so real and relevant to this day.

Nostalgic for Brooklyn?
A museum piece of an era in ethnic assertions of territoryGreat piece of nostalgia for Brooklyn and some lovely moments fromStrasberg, but over the top heavy handed directing, offensivestereotypes, and uneven acting throughout.

Codefree and anamorphic!
Despite the product description I was happy to realize that the DVD run in my Code 2 Player without any problem and that the aspect ratio is 16:9 anamorphic. I'm very happy about this and would like to share this experience so other buyers will know!
