It really impossible to say. Belts DO go bad - the must be replaced eventually - that they are generally a cheap and easy repair. It is certainly worth change the belt as a first step to see if that eliminates the problem. If your unit is years old and has not had a belt replacement, the odds go up that its the belt. I used to have a stacked unit and I found it "unusual" compared to a standard unit. I suggest you seek help from a service person or friend familiar with stacked units.
