I'd been propping the hood of my 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser (80-Series) up with a ski pole for years, since the old hood supports could no longer hold it up. I noticed how inexpensive these new after-market hood supports were and installed them just the other day, so I don't know how long they'll last. But they appear to be very well made -- maybe better than the originals -- and very strong. Once I got them installed, I nearly had to do a chin-up on the hood to pull it down. They are STRONG. (Note to self -- make damned sure the hood is closed all the way and fully latched before driving, as if not these supports could in theory shoot it skyward while driving...and then the air stream could...well...you know.) Removal of the old original supports required simply removing the 12mm bolts on both top and bottom. Both are very easily accessible. These new supports include a new 12mm top bolt, and you use the original 12mm bottom bolt when installing. The hood holes are threaded, and substantial. They fit flawlessly. I learned that on install, you really must install the bottom end of a support first, before the top; you'll never get the bottom end lined up otherwise...do it first and it's trivially easy. Also, prop the hood up to full height during install. If it's propped up even a tad more on one side than the other, for the lower end you'll either need to have a buddy hold it up high for a minute, or push it up with your head. These supports hold it up HIGH, and aligning them requires it to be HIGH. I'm very happy with the product; the supports should last a long time.

So the those that know the the '80s series has a very heavy Hood. The struts will give out over time if not with age. These will replace those aging struts and they do a pretty good job. I was using a hood clamp for a while till one slipped on me and slowly let the hood slide down. Lucky for me I was able to catch it and decided not to take any more chances with blowing out Hood struts installation's. Very straightforward. Do you have your bulb on the hood and bolt on the fender side? And as far as hood strut and strength to typical hood strap with about 20 lb of pressure, nothing won't shoot your hood to the sky. But it also is no slouch about it. It does the work it's intended to do
