This beautiful, practical guide to creating and embellishing embroidered boxes is written by Heather Lewis, a tutor with the Royal School of Needlework. It contains a history of the embroidered box, from the seventeenth century to the present day, and features techniques and guidance for needleworkers wishing to apply their skills to a practical application of the craft. There are three projects to try: a small treasure chest with a curved lid, embroidered dragonfly detail and a false floor; a hexagonal box with a beautiful embroidered lid depicting afternoon tea, and an intricate stumpwork casket with a mirror in the lid and a hidden drawer. Each has a template and extensive instructions for preparation, embroidery and construction. Review: Highly recommend this book - Just a wonderful how to book. The quality of the photography matches the clear yet detailed instructions . Not only is it the best box construction book I own, it also describes a surprising number of embroidery stitches. It covers everything from design, selecting materials, preparations, measurements through to final construction and finishing. Very well written. Review: Beautiful, helpful book - I checked out several box-making books before buying this one. I figured since it was produced by the RSN, it would be good. It is. Very clear instructions. Inspiring projects. Beautiful pictures. Although it's geared toward creating your own boxes, I bought it for ideas for creating diptychs and framing embroidery & textiles. It gave me a lot of ideas. Wonderful book and a joy to just sit with a cup of tea and read for pleasure. (The only issue I had with this order was the packaging. It arrived banged up. I didn't return it because of the coronavirus... desertcart workers are working as hard as possible, and books are taking longer to arrive due to priority of food & cleaning supplies, and I was eager to read it. This is not part of the rating of the book, just a heads-up.)
