Wandering Island

Lushly detailed art than nevertheless evokes simplicity.
The artwork in this manga is of a quality that I feel like if I merely went through and copied all the pictures, I would be a master artist by the end. The story is more told in pictures than in words, as our sexy tomboy heroine searches for a mythical island that seems to travel on its own. It was intriguing, and though a simple story I found myself completely engaged.Of course, it's really a huge to-be-continued at the end and as such it might be worth waiting to see if a sequel ever comes out to read this, because I feel like this much art takes about a million years to draw.[An edit from my original review. Some research shows that volume 1 came out in 2010, 7 years ago. If you are left with a to-be-continued for 7 years, that is poor service to the fans. I must drop my rating by a star for this disrespect.]

This manga is great at showing instead of telling
This manga is great at showing instead of telling. There will be pages where it just shows the character on their adventure with no speech bubbles, or very few, but you'll know exactly whats going on. It does a great job also showing her feelings in certain scenes and you can tell what she's thinking. Now if you analyze the story itself, it's kinda nothing special. It is very much like the beginning of many stories where the main character is trying to find something that they aren't sure is real. But the manga does a great job making it intriguing the whole time. It's not about the main character coincidentally finding something on their first try. In the manga they spend the whole time exploring and calculating. Which also can hint at future development for this character. We see her obsession and we see how she is willing to neglect her health, career, social life for the sake of something that may or may not be true.

Fine artwork and an unusual setting add to the interest
An appealing and offbeat story about a young woman who flies a small airplane to make deliveries in an island chain off Japan, and who inherits her grandfather's obsession with a legendary island that has been sighted at varying locations throughout the North Pacific. Fine artwork and an unusual setting add to the interest. The author also does a good job defining the character through her interactions with old friends. Only downside: I'm not sure the premise can lead anywhere believable in future volumes. Still, very enjoyable so far.

Fantastic Read
Wandering island is different from most manga I have read. The art is as unique as the story itself. I highly recommend this book! On a parental note I would hold off on letting your young ones read this one. This book contains partial nudity of the main character Mikura Amelia. No details are drawn, but not much is left to the imagination.

Subtle Masterpiece
Just fantastic, a real manga-lovers manga. Don't expect BOMBASTIC shounen action or anything, but the art and mystery elements of the story are totally sublime.

A volume that can stand by itself.
While I have my doubts that a volume 2 is actually coming, this volume stands on it's own as an amazing piece. The very best authors of manga and other graphic works know when to use words and when to tell the story purely with images and this is one of those cases. This is the sort of book that can respectfully sit among a shelf full of novels and be additive rather than an aberration.

...and then what happened? What do you MEAN "the end"?
.A very interesting story with a cool aesthetic and likable characters, but there's a catch - it ends abruptly with no closure. I really, really, really hope they are planning a sequel. Otherwise, this is going to be kind of a disappointment.

Beautiful and mesmerizing.
A breath of fresh air to my manga collection. The background detail put into the story is unbelievable and part of the story's attraction. A must read for any true fan of Japan's small island subculture. I lived in the Ryukyu's for four years and could not help but being transported back while reading "Wandering Island ".

A great and fresh manga!
Amazing graphic novel in the great Tsuruta style! The opening of the story is in colour and the rest of the book is in b&w! The thing, that impressed me most was, that the book's printed in the traditional Japan-reading-format - from right to left!Since the original Japanese version is from 5 years ago and Tsuruta publishes a novel every 10-12 years, I don't think we'll see Part 2 before 2021 year!

Spirit Of WonderForget-Me-Not
