First and foremost, the intended audience for this book is the analyst community, not the gaming community.I live in both worlds. So, that is meant to be informative, not perjorative.Matrix Games are a combination of narrative, judged games mixed with some elements of randomization through dice throws.Please see the pictures below.The book is well done. It includes the basic concept, four full scenarios, many illustrations, and a good amount of explanation.Matrix gaming has been around for awhile, and some analysts like it, and some don't.This book will not change your mind if you already hold one of the extreme positions.If you are new to matrix gaming then this book is a good introduction. If you like matrix gaming and are searching for some good, explanatory examples then this is also a useful book.If you are an experienced gamer looking for a new wargame then this is probably not a good fit for you.

I'm not yet sure if I'm a fan of matrix-style games, but this book is a clear, concise, and practical description of what they are and how to run one. It includes the materials for several games, so you can see what one is really like and not just read vagaries about it. Well done.

This book should be in every wargamer's library.

Ottimo libro per la descrizione del funzionamento dei Matrix games, con scenari di esempio già pronti da giocare e numerose informazioni. Tuttavia, gran parte del materiale può essere trovato online gratis e aggiunge poco a chi è già esperto con questo tipo di wargame professionali. Il libro comunque racchiude tutto in un volume di facile consultazione. Vale quindi 5 stelle per chi non ha esperienza di Matrix Games, 3 stelle per chi ne ha già e sa già dove trovare le informazioni realative. Ho quindi indicato la media: 4 stelle.Excellent book for explanation of how Matrix Games work, with scenario examples ready to play and numerous information. However, most of the material can be found online for free and it adds little to people already knowledgeable about this kind of professional wargame. The book is however a good all-in-one summary. It's worth 5 stars for people inexperienced with Matrix Games, likely not more than 3 stars for people who is already expert, and who knows where to find the same (and more) info. Average is therefore 4 stars.

It's an amazing product that introduces you to the Matrix Games and shows you a way to implement combats with the S.C.R.U.D system. The 5 scenarios looks great and it's so different one from another. And can't way to try it!

I am interested in simulation gaming both as a Wargamer and for professional reasons. This book provides a concise introduction into the very interesting concept of Matrix Games which combine role playing and very simple simulation techniques, with the help of a strong umpire. There is ample space for incomplete information and differences in perception. The result is a surprisingly capable tool for revealing hidden dynamics in conflict or crisis situations. The book includes several interesting case studies and examples of game maps and counters. To a large degree, this is an open system which invites and even requires additions and refinements. Very inspiring and insightful !

A worthwhile purchase. I ended up just reading it for pleasure. If I had any suggestions for improvement I would have liked to see a bit more on theory of how to design matrix games and the way briefings shape the game, perhaps with a 'worked' example
