MECCANOErector - Meccasaur

This is an excellent staycation (vacationing at home during school breaks) or summer vacation project. Your young engineer can tackle it like mine did – exclusively, over a period of three days or piecemeal over a longer timeframe. Either way, they will finally end up with the gargantuan 3’-foot long creature that moves, shakes, coos, farts, giggles and growls thanks to a programmable ‘brain’.This kit is a big step up from Meccano’s Micronoid line for ages 8+ and which features less than 200 parts. At 10+, this T-Rex has more than 750 parts and requires building the dinosaur frame around the centrally located heavy battery pack (acts both as the power source and the T-Rex’s ballast-like torso), proper positioning of the LED eyes, and connecting the ports for the eyes, battery and programmable unit via cables.The fun in this project for the 10+ age range is the building challenge itself. Seeing the assembled nuts and bolts come spectacularly to life was thrilling and gave my son a real sense of accomplishment. One challenge: when in attack mode, the T-Rex did a face plant. The forward movement and weight could not be supported. Using his STEAM knowledge, my son corrected that imbalance by simply extending the 16” tail another 7” with repurposed parts.For me, that’s the real interactivity in this product; when your engineer uses his own programmable brain to problem solve a design flaw. T-Rex is a complex and rewarding engineering project.

First of all I received the product for free from Spin Master to review. I have a 8 year old son (he will be 9 in November) for age reference. When we received it he was super excited to get started. The box is well organized with different parts separated by dividers. The instruction book was easily understood by my son and myself. We decided to assemble the Meccasaur as a father and son project. The assembly took us several hours working together. We were pleasantly surprised at the size Meccasaur. The toy has several functions but my son absolutely loves the "eight ball" feature. He loves the way it interacts with him when he asks it yes or no questions. He also enjoys the interactive features like how it reacts when he pets the toy, and the occasional farting noise it makes if left alone. As far as durability I waited over a week to write this review it has stood up to being packed all around the house and played with constantly. I have had to re-tighten a couple of screws but so far it has held up far past my expectations. I would definitely recommend this to everyone who likes to build. It is challenging and rewarding.

There is no doubt that this is a really cool toy once you get it put together.......heavy emphasis on "once you get it put together". I started with my 10 year old son helping out. It seemed pretty easy. After a few steps, it became readily obvious that unless your 10 year just got accepted to M.I.T. on a full academic scholarship, there is no way a child that young could do this.I am a Senior Reactor Operator at a nuclear power plant. My job is to meticulously follow procedures, and I struggled with this toy. It is all together now, and my son loves it. It works just as advertised.One important tip: There are several screw sizes. Some being only a couple of millimeters difference. Before you do anything, sort the screws by size. Use the parts list at the end of the building instructions to do this. I had to go back and find screws that I had used that were not the right ones and swap out for the correct ones.

When we received this in the mail from Spin Master my boys were so excited they couldn't wait to start putting it together. My nine-year-old says it was almost as fun putting it together as it is to play with it. He was able to put the entire dinosaur together by looking at the picture instructions included in the Box. They were clear, easy to follow and all the tools he needed or even included in the kit. Once assembled both my 8 year old and nine year old fell in love with their new friend. It combined two of their favorite things, robots and dinosaurs. That was a win-win for them. They know how it is able to interact with them, guard and attack feature and especially the roaring and stomping. As a parent I agree. This dinosaur is great. My boys would play with this for hours. We are so glad that Spin Master gave our family honor and pleasure of receiving this dinosaur at no cost asking us to share our opinion and recommendation with you. Again, we love it and highly recommend it. We can't imagine any boy that wouldn't be thrilled to receive this robot, dinosaur and friend.

It is definitely a long project. I did it with my 7 year old nephew who is obsessed with dinosaurs and building things. He would come and go in helping.I will say this..you HAVE to make sure the legs are correct or the balance will be off. I had another adult check my work and there were several things I had in the wrong hole even though I was insanely careful.In the end..he adores it, and adored the time we spent together. And thats the best gift of all, spending time together doing something the child loves.

My son got this for Christmas and we spent several days putting it together (it is A LOT of pieces). The directions were simple enough for him to read and figure out which pieces he needed. I would hold the pieces in place while he bolted them tightly. I was interested to see if it would work when we were done, and to my surprise it was FABULOUS!! He loves it and continues to play with it (not just put it together and let it sit in his room!). This was a great way to spend some quality time with my child and end up with a great fun product at the end!

Cadeau de Noël, mon fils a adoré

I bought this for my 9 year old grandson for Christmas and he absolutely loves it. It was much bigger than I expected it to be and it kept him busy for hours - think all together it took him 24 hours! When completed it was really worth it as he found it great fun. I thought it was really great that he loved a more traditional meccano toy rather than his video games or computer.
