Decent but uninspiring
This is the second of the two ‘Battle Across Time’ sets. The concept behind them is a little dubious and seems to be a bit of an excuse to redo existing figures either with a different colour scheme of with a bit of re-sculpting. Therefore, how desirable you find this pack will depend upon which figures you already have and/or how much you like these characters. As a popular character from the original Autobot line-up already with and excellent ‘Siege’ Cybertronian figure, Sideswipe is probably the figure most people will be interested in.He comes here in his traditional Earth form (albeit as an updated Lamborghini model). Despite being a pretty good figure, it somehow feels somewhat lacklustre and disappointing. This is because like many Autobots released as part of the ‘Siege’ toy line his Cybertronian vehicle just isn’t that different from his Earth one. The figure included here is, therefore, very similar in both modes and transforms exactly the same. All Hasbro have done is tweak the sculpt work slightly to provide a more Earth look. This results in some widening around the doors, chest/bonnet and legs/back of vehicle. This doesn’t really benefit the figure in robot mode. The chest, lower legs and back all become slightly wider and, hence, in comparison to the Siege model the arms, thighs and head all look a little out of proportion. The arms also don’t fit into place at the shoulders as well as they do on the Siege version. The vehicle mode has a couple of similar slight issues. The redesign of the window/roof makes the gun look too far forward when mounted. It also makes the bit of non-uniform coloured plastic below the window (which is on the Siege model and all its redecos) stand out more because the window doesn’t blend into it. And, sadly, there is no spoiler.Furthermore, you end up with an appearance that lies somewhere betwixt Siege Sideswipe and Earthrise Spinout. So, if you have both of these, this figure possibly isn’t worthwhile.Siege Sideswipe was an excellent figure that went on to spawn numerous repaints. If that figure hadn’t existed this one would no doubt be applauded more. As it stands, it just seems to be a bit of a weaker version. The second figure included has nothing to do with the infamous black and purple Seeker. Instead it is the Maximal character that appeared in the Japanese adaption/version/etc of ‘Beast Wars’.He is virtually a direct repaint of ‘Kingdom’ Airazor. The only difference is that he has a new head sculpt in robot mode. The altmodes, apart from the colour scheme, are identical despite Airazor transforming into a falcon and Skywarp into a bald eagle. The repaint looks far better and more realistic in bird form than the garish colour scheme of Airazor. The eagle form looks fairly good with the details of the feathering being particularly well done. As a nice touch, as it didn’t need to be included, his beak can also open slightly. The robot mode isn’t so impressive. It is quite spindly limbed (like many of the Beast Wars Kingdom figures) and the wings, although they do fold away reasonably well, still create a lot of weighty stuff on the figure’s back that gives it a bit of a balance problem on its thin legs. The new head sculpt is made to look as if it is formed from a false eagle head. Although faux pieces have been utilised successfully on many figures in the ‘War for Cybertron’ range, this one just looks a tad wrong because you can also clearly the actual eagle head forming the chest. Furthermore, the Maximal insignia is almost indistinguishable, being tiny on the bicep and almost hidden by the shoulder piece.
