Tensions are high in Verona, Italy, as the Capulets and the Montagues quarrel over an old grudge. Romeo, the only son of the Montagues, is listless and heartbroken over Rosalind, who scorns his love. Romeo's cousin Benvolio is determined to break Romeo's gloom, and convinces him to gate-crash the Capulets' annual feast. Romeo doesn't want to go--but when he learns that Rosalind will be there, he agrees to attend. Meanwhile, Juliet, the only child of the Capulets, is being pursued by the aristocratic Paris. When Romeo and Juliet meet unexpectedly at the feast, they settle their heart's choice on each other at once. They meet secretly at night, and make plans to marry, but the hatred between the families is fixed. When Juliet's cousin Tybalt sets out for Romeo's blood, Romeo must face an impossible choice.
