It doesnt smell bad, I like the way it smells. It has a sort of light fruit smell, I guess would be the best way to explain it.You will notice it in about 2 to 3 applications. It is very gradual change Hope this helps

Therefore, this would step you up from normal to dark... pale -> normal -> dark... if you are going for that look. A lot of triggered people in the comments and reviews for some reason, but this is actually a decent product.
