An exceptional tool that brings the tried and true chalk line into the modern era.
Chalk box has always been one of my favorite tools, a rock and a string that has been around since ancient times and is perfectly accurate all the time. Tajima refines the rock and a string concept into a very fine product. A very rugged aluminum case holds up to the rigors of daily job site use, the gear train rewind retracts the string very quickly and a very well designed and rugged hook works exceptionally well. Couple that with the fine, yet strong string and the very fine chalk (which you must use for this product) you get very fine, yet very visible lines. The Tajima is a great upgrade from the rather unrefined Straitline brand chalk box.

You've got to try a Tajima chalkline if you've used any other brand
The fine line and micro chalk make for clean, crisp lines without the "ghost" lines you get from other chalklines. Even makes a crisp line on foamboard and housewrap, which ordinarily make for blurred lines. I like it well enough that I ordered more than one and use different color chalks dependent upon application.

The blue box is actually purple
Its purple! Not a deal breaker though, line is tough and accurate. Doesn't spew a bunch of chalk out the end when drawing line due to a fibrous material inside cover that essentially cleans excess chalk as line is drawn. Crank handle protrudes 3/8" off box when closed. Ergonomic design and hard body makes it feel like a tool not a toy like other boxes. 1/32" thick hooking teeth aren't likely to bend or break and protrude 1/4" for a good bite on drywall. I'll sharpen the teeth for a solid bite on ply or OSB. Also if you use it a ton and work in rough conditions I'd recommend a dab of blue loctite on case body screws, nuts are not nyloc.

I'm going back to Irwin
The handle doesn't fold all the way back, so it tends to fold up if you try to crank it fast. The thin string makes a nice line, but it's a lot harder to pick up from the surface for the snap, and it broke after about a week of light use.

Best chalk line ever.
As a Union finish carpenter, this is the only chalk line I will ever use. Super thin line, perfectly accurate. I have one each for green, blue, white and orange lines.

What a Difference
I was using cheap Irwin snap lines for 7 years now, and finally got tired of them. With this Tajima I was amazed as soon as I opened the case. You can feel the quality in your hand. Aluminum case will hold up worlds better than plastic. When not using, the fill cap has a nice "latch" that the end hooks onto securely when not using and WILL NOT come off. I can't tell you how many times my Irwin would get pinched under a tool in my toolbag, and when I went to grab it 10' of line would be unwound and chalk on some of my tools. It winds up smoothly and has a line lock so if your arms can span it, you can snap it with your free hand. The fill cap is just a 1/4 turn, and has a nice rubber o-ring to help keep out moisture. The line is a thin braided line and produces a great line every time. No more lines that are 1/8" thick with excess chalk everywhere. I've never thought a chalk line was much of a tool until this Tajima showed me that they actually have "features". Make sure you buy extra Tajima chalk right away, as the bottle that comes with is only 1.4oz. However the small bottle comes in handy as it is much easier to carry around.

Nice Unit 4 1/2 Stars
I purchased a Bostitch Chalk Box about a month ago and have been fairly aggravated with it... Hard to wind up and dumps way too much chalk... Feels like I'm gonna snap the crank handle right off because its so stiff... I decided to give the Tajima a try after all the great reviews... And I must say, I do agree...Line pulls and retracts as easy as it gets... And I really like the nice clean thin chalk line it produces ... I can't tell yet if it will stand the test of time, but it feels sturdy enough... The line lock is a nice feature... This unit is more than double the cost of your "everyday" chalk boxes... And the line is really thin, so I'm sure its a lot more susceptible to breaking... I think it would be overkill if you need lines on concrete or rough framing... But for more delicate and percise situations (e.g. tile layouts), I think this unit is the way to go.....If it came with a belt clip, It would be perfect (at least for me)...

Not very bad but bulky piece & the line comes out a bit too thin
I think it's a bit too bulky compared to the previous one I've had from a different brand. Also I think that the line it leaves is too thin. Better for smooth not rough and uneven surfaces. Other than those things not too bad.

The best tool for any carpenter in the trade
As a Carpenter in the high rise industry. It’s important to be 100% with the mesurments as well cutting to the 1/8.The ultra thin 0.5mm line is perfect, it’s not dusty and it’s perfect for the crisp lines as well. Plus with the aluminum body it’s perfect for those heavy duty usage.I would advise anyone who is a carpenter or a layout man to pick this chalk line up!Plus this is my second chalk line from this manufacturer.

MADE IN CHINA
Don't let the name fool you this is a cheap product. Tajima claims to be a Japanese company with global manufacturers. This product does not meet the Japanese industrial standards for QC. Fit and finish is substandard and mine was tangled out of the package. It works but so does a 5$ chalk line. At least you expect a 5$ chalk line to be cheap.Don't waste your money.

My last Chalkline
Best chalkline I ever owned. Seriously this thing has never jammed up on me and I leave it in my pouch all day every day. It rains here ALOT and its never gotten penetrated and gummed up from the rain like soooo many other chalklines I have used have.I love the extra thin line, its super thin but snaps really nicely, my co-workers were very impressed. My partner has a Chalk Right 1, the thicker lined one, and he was jealous too at this ones quality. His is made of plastic, this ones Aluminum. This line is a lifer, and that justifies the extra price in every way.

Thin accurate lines, easily broken
I really liked this chalk line and bought it based on reviews. Unfortunately I work outside in a rainy city and it got wet. Even after dumping the chalk out and drying the line, the line kept snapping with even minor tension after that. This seems best suited for indoors only.
