A reissue of a classic record

I bought the original record in 1958. This is a great replacement. I appreciate the greatness of Tal more than ever. The group as a whole is fantastic. Eddie Costa and Vinnie Burke deserve much more recognition for their contribution to the recording and to jazz.

The best album Tal ever recorded

Tal Farlow was at the top of his game and had an excellent working trio (with pianist Eddie Costa as an excellent foil) when he went into the studio for Verve records in 1956 and cut this record. The same trio cut "The Swinging Guitar of Tal Farlow" at virtually the same time, and the two records are definitely a high peak in Farlow's discography.Others may or may not agree with me that this particular record is his very finest, but nobody would say it's not a 1st-tier record in his discography.I cannot vouch for the sound quality of this import release. Tal's records are in the public domain in Europe, which means anyone can release them, and some of the labels doing so probably don't have any access to master tapes or anything other than previously released LPs and CDs of the material. So buyer beware...the very best sound is probably going to be found in a licensed version, such as the Mosiac Records complete Tal Farlow boxed set, or a Verve/Polygram Japanese CD reissue. It looks like this label has added some bonus tracks from a 1958 Verve session titled "This Is Tal Farlow", which featured these same three musicians joined by drummer Jimmy Campbell. That's a nice addition, though that entire record is also worth seeking out.

The title album plus a significant amount of the album titled This Is Tal Farlow

Farlow is simply amazing on all of the tracks on this album and a half. Sadly there are no sound samples at the time of this review because his playing in both trio (the first eight tracks) and quartet on the remaining ones shows just how powerful and musical he was during this period. The first eight tracks are the title album, and were recorded in NYC for Norman Granz' Norgran label in 1956.The album would be reissued on Verve. It features Eddie Costa on piano and Vinnie Burke on bass, both of whom are excellent on the album. Costa achieved wider fame - to a degree - but Burke did not get the recognition he deserved. Here is an opportunity to hear just how tight the three are as a trio, as well as Farlow's earlier work that is actually jaw dropping. All of the remaining tracks were recorded for Verve in NYC on January 17 and 18, and March 3, 1958 for an album titled This Is Tal Farlow. It is almost the complete album, so it's a nice bonus. These tracks feature Farlow and Costa backed by Bill Tackus with Knobby Totah on some tracks on bass, and Jimmy Campbell on drums. If you are a Farlow (or Costa) fan this is a treasure, and all of the tracks contain some of the best jazz guitar (and piano) from the era.
