The Best!
If the space that you would like the gate to rest against when open is smaller than the stair opening this is 100% the best gate for you!The gate extends to cover the length of our steps and when we open it, it adjusts to be smaller and rests against the wall

Looks good, questionable construction
UPDATE - Aug 7th, 2024I reached out to Regalo to inquire about the warranty and I was told they would NOT warranty the gate because I had bought it as a returned product and to go through Amazon instead. Consider now, does Regalo not warranty their products if purchased as a returned item or open box from a brick and mortar store like Target? What's the difference? With the gate installed, box/packaging disposed of, uninstalling and sending the parts anywhere (ordering and installing a new gate) was not worth my time so I modified the gate to overcome it's shortfalls in my original review.ORIGINAL REVIEWThe Regalo Heritage wooden extra wide baby looks nice from a material and color standpoint. Installation is straightforward as with any baby gate. Instructions are easy to follow and hardware is adequate. That said, looks do not make up for function, especially in a product that is supposed to prevent injury or death of kids and or pets. The stress point where you pull the gate up is not mechanically fastened together. It is held with only a small dab of glue (only at the tip of the wood) and slight ribbing. All other corners of the gate are of the same construction. Once the gate frame separates completely, the grey balusters fall out of their retention holes because there is nothing holding them in place. The middle of the gate, where the two frames come together has no way to lock the two pieces together. The frames are always moving during use, making closing the gate tedious to keep everything aligned. In the photo you see I used a zip tie to hold the frames from moving. One each at the top and bottom. This fixed this issue.Every time you close the gate the latch post screws in ever so slightly and eventually needs to be adjusted out again or the gate will not latch well. Adding some thread locker to keep the latch post from screwing in should stop this. These issues would have easily been discovered if this gate was tested before commercial production. I learned all of this in less than 30 days of ownership and use. While there is a warranty, it is not worth anything because the construction is in complete question along with the safety claims given the construction techniques used in the gates production.

Unhinged!
The gate itself is decent and I like the look, but there are a couple of flaws. The installation isn’t the easiest even with all of the guides it comes with. The clip that supposed to keep the gate from popping off doesn’t work if you’re installing that side directed under a handrail since there isn’t enough room to slip it on from above. You could take the handrail off to do it, but that was more work than it’s worth for me.We have had the gate installed for a couple months now and it can be tricky to latch the top and the bottom together. We ended up removing the bottom latch and just latching the top for this reason. Likely not recommended by the manufacturer so take that for what you will.We have also seem some wear and discoloration where the 2 gate pieces slide together when extending and shrinking the gate. Overall though, we like the look and enjoy the gate. We didn’t want a cheap looking gate that you had to awkwardly step over the bottom part while also having to step on it since it’s on a stair or skip a stair.

Would def recommend especially for animals !?
This gate is ABSOLUTELY what we were looking for , for our dogs! Super sturdy and that’s because one dog jumps over it and it is still in great standing !

Updated design is sturdier + good customer service
Updated review June 23, 2024 - Good customer service, company improves their products. Our installation is close to the max width. The gate definitely rattles and jams a bit sliding in/out and when latching in such a wide configuration. However, it looks nice, does its job well, and the issues feel minor.First gate we bought failed at the screw that forms the hinge at the wall mount. Regalo has since updated their design (inset threaded sleeve, rather than threads directly in the wood). The updated product is significantly sturdier. Regalo replaced the failed product free of charge. Their website officially lists a 90-day warranty, but it is worth contacting them beyond that window - they do replace products well past that date if they have found design/manufacturing issues.

Find a different gate.
This is probably my least favorite gate I’ve ever purchased. I’ve tried really hard to give it a chance, but I honestly don’t like it.The gate itself looks nice, however it’s almost impossible to get the bottom and the top to line up and close with one hand. You have to have free time to attempt to get both to line up and go in the slots. The gate also does not slide nicely. It is difficult and scratching the top coat off the wood. You have to kind of man handle it to slide open in order to walk through it.And because you have to almost get rough with the gate to open, slide, and close it, this is not a very quiet experience.Overall I wouldn’t recommend it. Maybe I got a dud ? But other than looking nice, I really dislike it.
